Whether you work from home as a freelancer or you’re just trying to get all your housework done over the weekend, it can be hard to maintain a consistent level of motivation and productivity.
Here are five ways to boost motivation and productivity and get you on a clear path to hit your goals.
1. Take Breaks
Taking breaks can actually boost productivity and improve mental health. These moments when you’re resting and not actively doing something can give you the mental break you need to get motivated for the next task.
Go on a walk around your neighborhood, eat a healthy snack, drink a glass of water, or focus on your breathing for a few minutes. One caveat to taking a break is to make sure it doesn’t turn into an extended break—this can actually hurt productivity and delay getting started on the next task.
2. Set a Timer
Keep yourself motivated and on track by setting timers for each task you need to accomplish and trying to complete each task before the timer goes off. If you don’t finish before the timer goes off, don’t beat yourself up over it.
This is simply a strategy that can help make you more efficient in the work that you do so you can get faster over time. It’s also beneficial in that it can help determine exactly how long each task takes to keep you organized and on track.
3. Eliminate Distractions
You’d be surprised at how easily you can get distracted when trying to stay focused on the task at hand. Consider fixing any appliances that are making noise, soundproofing windows, and regulating all other noises.
In addition to reducing noise, be sure to remove all clutter and have bright lighting in your workplace. Prioritize eliminating distractions before settling in a quiet place of your home to get work done.
4. Listen to Uplifting Music
Get yourself in the mood to do work. If you’re trying to finish some household chores, doing freelance or remote work, or even getting in a few good workouts, add in some appropriate music to motivate you to hit your goal.
If you’re doing work that requires more focus, consider playing soothing white noise or classical music. If you’re doing housework, turn on your favorite playlist that boosts your energy to get you pumped to clean the house.
5. Find Joy in Your Tasks
Sometimes, our productivity decreases because we don’t really want to tackle the chores in the first place. Maybe they aren’t fun or maybe there are so many things on our to-do list that we become overwhelmed. No matter the reason, try and find joy and purpose in the tasks that you’re doing to increase motivation and boost productivity.
A great way to do this is to think of the light at the end of the tunnel. Think about the fact that you’ll be able to enjoy a clean house when you’re done with your chores or a nice meal when you’re done cooking.
