The Taurid showers in the North and South may not be known for a large number of meteors, yet it offers a spectacular view of many fireballs. Fireball meteors are exceptionally bright and can be spotted the earliest.
Every seven years, the fireballs in the Taurid showers reach their peak, and most are spotted. In 2015, everyone who witnessed the shower was in awe of the high percentage of Taurid fireballs in the sky. While the 2020 display is not expected to throw a grand show, you never know what turns up!
When To Watch The Taurid Fireballs?
The Taurid meteor shower will be active through most of November 2020. The South Taurids are expected to peak on the night of the 5th and the North ones on the 12th. With the waning gibbous Moon in the South, the view of the Taurid fireballs might be interrupted.
But the crescent Moon with the North Taurid will probably offer a spectacular sight of fireballs. Since the Taurid fireballs are quite bright, even the Moon’s presence might not be much of a hindrance!
The best time to view the fireballs will be just after midnight, but they will be visible till dawn in general.
The Southern shower offers around 5 meteors per hour when it peaks. The Northern shower offers a couple more. The farther you are from artificial light, the better the view for you!
The Taurid shower is the debris of Comet 2P/Encke. When Earth enters the belt of this comet’s debris, the meteors burn in our atmosphere. It is believed that Jupiter’s presence divided the original stream into the North and South Taurids.
The North and South Taurid meteor showers offer some of the brightest fireballs each year. They are mostly active in the months of October and November.
So, be prepared with your binoculars and other tools to witness the fiery show this meteor shower is about to put up for us all!
