How We Can Remain Positive When The World Around Us Is Negative

Sometimes most of us get the unsettling feeling that the entire world is negative and no matter what we attempt, it’s doomed to failure before we start.

It’s easy to feel that way. Life just isn’t so simple that all we have to do is wrinkle our noses like Samantha the witch did, and things happen. If we’re in a hurry, traffic seems to slow down. When we plan something the weather may not cooperate and at work, someone else gets the promotion we were expecting. We all occasionally become frustrated and irritated that things don’t seem to go our way. The bus is late, the dry cleaner doesn’t have our dress or suit ready when promised, the waiter misunderstood our lunch order in a restaurant and we have to wait too long for a replacement. The list goes on. This can drain a great deal of energy from our lives making it very difficult for us to deal with all the difficulties we face daily as we move along through life. And it’s not just the catastrophic events that eat away at us. They’re bad when they occur, but every day, all the little inconveniences begin to pile up and gnaw away at our very spirits. It’s easy to begin to believe the world is against us.This can drain a great deal of energy from our lives making it very difficult for us to deal with all the difficulties we face daily as we move along through life. And it’s not just the catastrophic events that eat away at us. They’re bad when they occur, but every day, all the little inconveniences begin to pile up and gnaw away at our very spirits. It’s easy to begin to believe the world is against us.

But there is hope for a more fruitful, peaceful and satisfying life. An important mistake we often make is to blame others for our misfortunes. It becomes easy to criticize and blame others, but this is a very negative approach and solves nothing, because we have no control over the lives of others, and we should never try to exercise control over other adults.

A better way is to look into ourselves and consider our own behavior, try to be objective in studying our own shortcomings and focus on improving ourselves from within.

It’s important to be selective in choosing friends. Friends can have a much greater influence on our lives than we may think, so it’s vital to seek supportive and uplifting friendships.

Too much negative media does little to help. The media, in general, thrives on instilling fear into its viewers, we see it in this year’s elections, and we see it in the constant talk of terrorism and fear of other calamities. There are television shows that do nothing but offer us apocalyptic programming that discusses nothing but the different violent and horrifying ends of the earth. There are plenty of positive sources for information and entertainment and this is what will help us to have and maintain a more positive attitude toward life.

It’s good to get outdoors and appreciate nature. Even a walk in a park can be refreshing and calm the mind and spirit. People in cities typically live under a great deal of stress. Crowds, noise, traffic and a general air of aimless activity are not conducive to a quiet peaceful lifestyle.

It’s important to pay attention to our everyday behavior. Do we frown, go about with a negative attitude? When given a chore do we accept it with a positive smile or with a glum look of despair that we should be given yet another chore to add to our already overloaded burden? By paying attention to our actions and our interactions with others, we may quickly see ways to improve our outlook on life and become a more positive person.

In this life, the truth is that we have very little control over anything, even over ourselves, but the little that we can control should become a point of focus. Trying to control the ideas, behavior or thoughts of others if fruitless and only increases a feeling of negativity. We should let go of that and concentrate on what control we have over our own lives. In this way, we may have less stress combined with greater energy to devote our efforts on the things that truly matter in our lives.

Acquisition of property can be very detrimental. The more we buy and the more we want only leads to stress and ultimately a feeling of negativity. An end result of this behavior can be hoarding, a malady that can be as insidious as cancer.

Relaxation is extremely important. No matter how busy our day, we should endeavor to find time for a little break now and then to sit back and relax, even if only for ten or fifteen minutes.

It’s important to be able to open up and express what we feel and think. wehave to be honest with ourselves. By speaking out and being more honest with ourselves, we relieve ourselves of the burden of these emotions that we may be packing around inside us.

It should be obvious that we have to maintain a healthy lifestyle. When we’re ill or suffer from poor health, the difficulties of maintaining an uplifting positive attitude are multiplied. The food we eat, the way we live, all these including a lack of exercise can have a very negative effect not only on the body but upon the spirit as well.

Instead of looking at the difficulties, we should focus our attention on solutions to them. We can learn from problems and from solving them. When we see them only as obstacles, we hold ourselves back.

One very important part of being a positive person is to learn to be compassionate. People around us can be negative, have closed minds and spirits, be very set in their ways and stubborn, but we should never allow this to touch us. Arguing or being at odds with them gains us nothing. Our only hope is to create a positive environment around us through having compassion and understanding of the difficulties experienced by others.

A peaceful mind is a goal to be sought from the beginning of self-improvement. Having conflict and agitation in our minds create negativity. The goal of a peaceful mind is to overcome this. Many find meditation, even if only for a few minutes a day, can be immensely helpful.

We’re the only persons who can take responsibility for our lives. Failing to do this, we may be doomed forever to feel we’re a victim of circumstance. When we take the reins of responsibility into our own hands, we begin to take charge of our destiny and to give it shape.

The only real change we can make in this world it within our own selves. We can be the change we want to see. The only way to push the negativity aside is for us to project our positive attitude and it can help turn the world into a better place for all. Let’s take that first step and start today toward becoming a better person.
