When young Jacob Barnett was diagnosed with autism, he was only two years old.
His mother was informed by medical specialists that her son would have trouble working to achieve even the most basic of tasks like tying his shoes or reading.
Obviously his parents were concerned about their sin’s education and hence as per advice had him enrolled to an education program specially designed to address the boy’s shortcomings.
After enrolling her son into the program, Ms. Barnett noticed that her son had undergone a dramatic change. He had started withdrawing from everyone and grew more and more lonely with each passing day.
It obviously takes a person of strong character to move away from pre-existing social norms an this is precisely what Ms. Barnett did. She took Jacob out out the special program and prepared him for kinder garden herself.
This radical action would change Jacob in ways more than one. While catering to her son, Ms. Barnett noticed that her son was progressing at an unheard of speed.
His intellectual prowess and thirst for knowledge far exceeded his age. A subsequent IQ test showed him to possess an IQ of 170, higher than Einstein’s 165.
Jacob is currently enrolled at the Indiana University-Purdue University studying physics. At the age of eleven he was by far the youngest astrophysics researcher to date.
At age 12, Jacob enrolled in university full-time, and it was around then that he published his first physics paper.
At 15, he became the youngest researcher to ever be accepted to Waterloo, Ont.’s Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Canada, where he is currently studying for his PhD, the youngest student ever in the institute’s 16-year history to do so.
He has even spoken at a TED talk conference. A professor at his university had this to say about him,
“The theory that he’s working on involves several of the toughest problems in astrophysics and theoretical physics … Anyone who solves these will be in line for a Nobel Prize.”
None of this however would have been possible without exploring the unique strengths that each person possesses. We need specialists who see and unleash our potentials not our problems.
