Many will agree that the Dalai Lama is a pretty interesting fella, especially after he revealed his stance on extraterrestrial life. During an interview, the Dalai Lama was asked what is it in this world that surprises him most, and his mind blowing answer made us stop for a moment and think.
“Man surprised me most about humanity. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.”
Pretty impressive and powerful statement, if you really grasp the idea. Of course, it is incredibly easy to read this quote and just continue on the very next thing, but if you really take the time to let it echo in your conscious mind, just for a few minutes – the true meaning and profoundness of his words will kick in.
Everything is backwards on Earth!
There are so many things that we don’t do right. We live our lives in such a destructive way in so many aspects of our existence, and what is worse we believe that money can fix everything. To get the money we practically force ourselves into doing jobs we son’t even remotely like – which of course is not good for your health to begin with.
We do it thinking about all the toys that we can buy or our retirement savings, which we may not even live long enough to see. Sometimes, I get the feeling that we are here just to work. In a sense we are like slaves – it’s just that we are not aware of it.
The Dalai Lama’s quote reminds me of another quote which also faithfully depicts the state of our society.
“Just look at us. Everything is backwards, everything is upside down. Doctors destroy health, lawyers destroy justice, psychiatrists destroy minds, scientists destroy truth, major media destroys information, religions destroy spirituality and governments destroy freedom.” – Michael Ellner
Some will find this pretty obvious, but to others it might come as a surprise. But if we try and dig dipped than just scratching the surface, we will find a lot of truth in these pessimistic words.
Both statements carry very powerful messages that can inspire us to do the necessary positive changes and improve our lives.
Sometimes, in order to welcome something new, it is necessary to get rid of something old.
In order to receive new knowledge, new insights, and live a more meaningful and fulfilling life, it is necessary to leave the old and ‘rotten’ beliefs that the life imposed by the modern society we are currently living can bring us true happiness.
