March Full Moon & Blue Moon ∼ Get Ready For An Energy-Packed Month

When is the Full Moon for March 2018? Actually, this year, there are two!

March is a special month, not only because it’s when the spring equinox occurs, but also because it will host two full Moons this year—one on the 1st and another on the 31st (just as we had two full Moons in January).

Full Moon: March 1, 7:51 P.M.
Last Quarter: March 9, 6:20 A.M.
New Moon: March 17, 9:12 A.M.
First Quarter: March 24, 11:35 A.M.
Full Moon: March 31, 8:37 A.M.

All dates and times are EST. See the Moon Phase Calendar for your city/state.

March’s Full Moon was traditionally called the Full Worm Moon by Native Americans who used lunar phases to track the seasons. Colonial Americans also used these names, especially those of the local Algonquin tribes who lived between New England and Lake Superior.

At the time of this Moon, the ground begins to soften enough for earthworm casts to reappear, inviting the return of robins and migrating birds—a true sign of spring.

Roots start to push their way up through the soil, and the Earth experiences a re-birth as it awakens from its winter slumber.

In some regions, March’s full Moon is instead known as the Sap Moon, as it marks the time when maple sap begins to flow and the annual tapping of maple trees begins. When a second full Moon occurs in March, it is called the Full Sap Moon. The second full Moon in a single month is more generally called a Blue Moon.

An alternative name for March’s full Moon is the Full Sap Moon, as this is the time of year when the sap of sugar maples starts to flow.

When two full Moons occur in a single calendar month, the second is called a Blue Moon. In March 2018, a Blue Moon will occur on the 31st. Learn more about the meaning of a Blue Moon.
