Every full moon is different in terms of what it brings into your life. Every month (and on rare occasions, twice), there is a new full moon, each with its own story to tell, a meaning behind its name, and its own unique way of affecting you.
Though all full moons have the same energy, each one has a slightly different vibe because the exact positions of the planets change from year to year — and, of course, we evolve as well. Furthermore, depending on your birth chart, each full moon may affect you differently than others around you. And the worm moon on March 7, 2023 will be especially powerful.
The worm moon occurs every March, but the 2023 worm moon is particularly significant, says Narayana Montúfar, senior astrologer for Astrology.com and author of “Moon Signs: Unlock Your Inner Luminary Power.” The moon “is bringing a lot of karmic endings as well as redirections in our path. It is basically an act of balance between the left and right sides of the brain, and by attaining it, we can reach an overall feeling of wholeness,” she says.
What is the Meaning behind the Full Moon?
A Full Moon occurs when the moon is directly opposite to the sun. This means that all the binaries in life come in stark contrast with each other. And you might feel challenged in dealing with these binaries, your work life and home, your hobbies versus your duties and so on.
But the Full Moon also means that the qualities which are associated with the moon, such as emotions and instincts are at their peak. With luck you’d be able to use them for your benefit and maintain a harmony in your relationships.
Why Is It Called the Worm Moon?
According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, there are two theories as to why March’s moon is known as the “worm moon.” According to one theory, the worms emerge from the earth in March as a result of heavy rainfall and soil thawing.
However, “an alternative explanation for this name comes from Captain Jonathan Carver, an 18th-century explorer, who wrote that this Moon name refers to a different type of ‘worm’ — beetle larvae — which begin to emerge from the thawing bark of trees and other winter hideouts at this time,” according to the Almanac.

The Spiritual Meaning of the Worm Moon
The full moon in March is a signal to connect with karmic change.
The worm moon in practical Virgo is conjunct with the sun, Mercury, and Neptune all in romantic water sign Pisces. As a result, “we’re more sensitive to emotional undercurrents and the allure of fantasies and magic,” according to Aryn. However, “The Virgo full moon grounds us in reality. It reveals which aspects of our routine we are ignoring and may need to be redirected, and it encourages us to nourish both our bodies and our spirits. The Virgo-Pisces axis is about service and the role we play in our local and global communities.”
Another important factor is Saturn, the planet of boundaries, responsibility, and self-mastery, which leaves Aquarius and enters Pisces just an hour after the full moon, according to Montúfar. “As a result, this full moon could bring an end to a situation that began on March 21, 2020, when Saturn first entered Aquarius.” Because Saturn rules karma, these endings or grand finales will feel “destined” or “meant to be.”
Montúfar continues, “the spiritual message of the worm moon is that whatever happens now is nonnegotiable,” so be prepared to take a big leap of faith and look forward with excitement and clarity.
When Is the Next Worm Moon?
