Three weeks after he died, my brother Billy woke me up at sunrise and began telling me about his experiences in the afterlife. At first, I thought it was my grief that was causing me to hear his voice. But when my brother started telling me cosmic secrets that I couldn’t ignore, I became his student.
Billy taught me that the big pop gives you amnesia when you’re born. One of the most important things we do on Earth is try to remember what we have forgotten.
But when you die, you realize a lot of things you didn’t know while you were alive, such as:
1. Life on Earth is not a punishment for your transgressions in the past.
You’re not acting out some sort of I-did-something-wrong-to-you-in-another-life-and-now-I’m-paying-for-it scenario. It doesn’t really work that way. The idea of an eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth karmic equalization of the score isn’t true.
2. You chose your life circumstances before birth for soul-type reasons that are nearly impossible to comprehend while on Earth.
If you understood these reasons, life would lose some of its sting, and that sting is what enlightenment is all about.
3. Everything shifts.
You realize how much when you die. You also realize that there are things that are immortal, that you take with you, and that they change as well. What exactly does the Eastern concept of Maya, or illusion, mean? It denotes something temporary.
4. Even the difficult parts of life are enjoyable. And we all make what we call mistakes.
However, so-called errors are acceptable. They’re just a part of the deal.
5. You’re supposed to do all kinds of things on Earth, things that may not make sense to humans.
So, before you pass judgment on yourself or your fellow man, pause for a moment. Being completely non-judgmental while alive, on the other hand, is very advanced. To be that advanced, you’d have to be a Buddha.
6. There is no single correct way for things to turn out.
Some endings are happier than others, but it’s not just the percentage of happiness that matters. It’s because of the music.
7. Society instills limitations.
Whatever you’ve been taught, everything you’ll ever need is already within you. And who you truly are is incomprehensible to you. That is why living crammed into the human experience can be excruciating at times.
8. At the heart of everything is an energy, an immaterial substance known as LOVE.
Wow, and how wonderful this LOVE feels. It’s impossible to imagine. You simply cannot. There is no way for you to fully experience the power of LOVE while on this plane.
9. Death is not as serious as you believe.
It’s actually a lot of fun. It doesn’t get any better than this. And saying goodbye to the people you care about isn’t as serious as it appears, because you’ll see them again.
