This month, as the sun prepares to enter its home sign of Leo, you’ll be tapping into your main character energy just in time for a beach vacation. However, as you prepare to sit back and relax, the retrograde planets of July 2023 will arrive with a vengeance. In total, four planets will be reversing through the cosmos in July, which is a bit excessive — but only one will be stationing retrograde this month: Venus. She’ll undoubtedly be the star of the show this summer, which means you’ll be paying close attention to your relationships.
What’s A Retrograde?
A retrograde is a visible change in the motion of any planet through the sky. Each of the eight planets (aside from the luminaries, aka the sun and moon) has a consistent retrograde cycle that is unique to their relative speeds. The inner planets, such as Mercury, Venus, and Mars, have shorter retrograde periods; the outer planets, such as Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, have longer retrograde periods because they move at a slower rate. When a planet stations retrograde, it appears to be retracing its steps through space, but the celestial body is simply moving at a much slower rate than usual. This is where retrograde mishaps usually occur: The planet’s ability to achieve its usual goal is impacted by the change in tempo.
What Planets Will Be Retrograde July 2023?
As previously stated, four planets will be retrograde in July, but only one Venus will be stationing retrograde this month. The planet of love, pleasure, and creativity will join Saturn, Neptune, and Pluto, all of which have been stationing retrograde in recent months. This is Venus’s first retrograde station in Leo since 2015, so it’s bound to bring some important themes to light, particularly in the house Leo occupies in everyone’s birth chart.
What to Expect from July 2023’s Retrograde Planets
- Pluto stationed retrograde on May 1
- Saturn stationed retrograde on June 17
- Neptune stationed retrograde on June 30
- Venus will station retrograde on July 22
Venus Retrograde (July 22 – September 3)
Venus will station retrograde in the fixed fire sign of Leo on July 22, the same day that Leo season begins. Venus looks for dramatic, over-the-top displays of affection that feel genuine and intentional in this sign. Because Leo is a sun-ruled sign, this also draws attention to relationships, making them more public and vulnerable to scrutiny from outsiders. You may feel an increased desire for external validation and appreciation from those with whom you are in relationships while Venus is in Leo. However, as Venus returns to this sign until September 3rd, you’ll rethink how you go about securing your needs and desires. This transit is not subtle, especially when it comes to going after what you want. If you feel unwanted or unappreciated during this retrograde, you are more likely to cut ties and walk away. This could also be a time when ego and pride are more prevalent in relationships. How willing are you to make a sacrifice for the sake of the relationship? Venus was retrograde in Leo from July to September of 2015, which means that similar themes from that time period may resurface.
While relationships will be the main focus, you may find yourself rethinking your relationship with money, creativity, food, and passion. Venus rules over indulgences, so be mindful of how much you allow yourself to give in to your desires. They’re bound to feel much more urgent now that Venus is in a fire sign. Pace yourself and avoid making rash decisions based on an inflated ego or arrogance. This is a good time to think about your needs (and how they’re being met), but it’s also a good time to prioritize yourself. You do not have to put your desires on hold because another person cannot or will not give you what you deserve.
