Welcome to the preshow, folks.
The upcoming Mercury pre-shadow phase starts on June 12/13, 2026. During this time, the planet slows down and begins tracing the exact path of the zodiac that it will eventually retrace backwards during the official retrograde, which runs from June 29 to July 23.
In today’s world, our devices and a robust Wi-Fi connection are essential for nearly every task we undertake. When Mercury goes retrograde, it often disrupts technology, communication, and transportation, leading us to feel even more frazzled.
Mercury doesn’t just retrograde frequently—three to four times a year for three weeks each time—but there’s an added twist: its effects can be felt both before and after the event. There are two distinct phases at play—Mercury retroshade and Mercury storm—surrounding the official Mercury retrograde period. During this time, the messenger planet may trigger slowdowns, miscommunication, and a host of glitches.
Discover all the essential insights about the Mercury retrograde shadow period—and learn why it doesn’t have to spell doom at every corner.

What Exactly Is Mercury Retroshade?
One essential aspect to understand about the realm of communication: As the swiftest planet in our solar system, it zips around the Sun in just 88 Earth days, reaching speeds of nearly 112,000 mph. This remarkable velocity makes its slowdowns and standstills all the more noticeable. Before it can enter retrograde motion or seem to move backward from our perspective on Earth, it must first slow down and come to a brief stop. Consider incorporating active recovery and rest intervals into your interval training routine.
In the two weeks leading up to a Mercury retrograde, the planet begins to slow down, and for another two weeks after it goes direct, it takes time to regain its full speed. The phases are known as the pre- and post-shadow periods, also referred to as retroshade. In the pre-shadow phase, Mercury will traverse a specific point in the sky known as “degrees” (for instance, it might be around 22° Pisces). As it enters its retrograde phase, it will retrace its steps through those degrees and revisit that point once it accelerates towards a complete recovery after the retrograde concludes.
The pre-shadow phase kicks off when Mercury, in direct motion, reaches the point where it will land at the conclusion of its retrograde journey. The post-shadow concludes when Mercury, now moving forward, reaches the point where its retrograde journey first commenced. It’s essentially an astrological zig-zag. In total, we experience nine weeks of Mercury’s antics: three weeks of a gradual slowdown (pre-shadow), followed by three weeks of actual retrograde motion, and concluding with three weeks of ramping back up to full speed (post-shadow).

Fundamental Insights on the Pre-Shadow
As Mercury progresses through its degrees, it will eventually retrace its steps, offering you a glimpse of what lies ahead during the upcoming retrograde phase. This is the moment when technical glitches, slowdowns, and miscommunications arise. Your email to your boss might vanish into the void, or your partner could misinterpret a harmless text. Expect to uncover insights regarding the emotional journey that lies ahead during the retrograde. Imagine discovering an old journal while tidying up your apartment, sparking a moment of reflection on the patterns that have shaped your past relationships. Be mindful of your coping strategies, as a similar challenge could be just ahead.
Fundamental Insights on the Post-Shadow
Just because Mercury is going direct doesn’t mean you’ll escape those pesky headaches. After we celebrate Mercury going direct, the retroshade period will continue to linger for approximately two more weeks. Expect the usual retrograde communication hiccups and device troubles, as Mercury is still gearing up to reach its full velocity. This period serves as an opportunity for a post-retrograde cleanup, allowing you to reflect on the insights gained during the transit and to finalize any lingering matters.

Retroshade vs. Retrograde
Considering the regularity of these transits, astrologers typically advise against treating the shadows as if they were the retrograde itself. In essence, go ahead and advance with your travel plans, essential communications, significant electronic purchases, or ensuring every detail is precise in that important contract—just remember to stay a bit more alert than usual.
Another reason not to give in to the hype and fearmongering about the phase: It’s a relatively new concept, first explored in the 1980s, that modern astrologers acknowledge, but historically, astrologers weren’t worried about in the least.
A review of the oldest astrological texts reveals no evidence of this concept. Ancient astrologers recognized Mercury retrograde as a powerful and transformative phase, leveraging its energy to their benefit. They approached the so-called ‘pre-shadow’ and ‘post-shadow’ periods without fear.

What Exactly Is Mercury Retrograde Storm?
You might not notice the effects of Mercury retrograde directly, but you will certainly experience the surrounding phases, known as the Mercury retrograde storm. The storm emerges as the swiftest planet decelerates dramatically, nearing a complete halt, precisely when it shifts into retrograde and subsequently resumes its direct motion. During these times, slowdowns, delays, and miscommunications become increasingly noticeable.
Nonetheless, the same holds true for every major astrological aspect in this case: the day you’ll truly notice the impact of Mercury’s backward motion will be when it shifts into retrograde or goes direct.
Final Words
Mercury retroshade encompasses the two-week periods that precede and follow Mercury retrograde, commonly referred to as “pre-shadow” and “post-shadow.” As the planets shift, you might sense a Mercury retrograde vibe, with communication issues, relationship challenges, and everyday life problems bubbling to the surface. During the pre-shadow phase, maintaining resilience is crucial, as your experiences during this time may remain significant throughout the retrograde period. In the end, both times present an excellent opportunity for introspection, effective communication, and careful consideration.
