Death is one of the most frequent occurring symbols in nightmares and dreams. They are also very common dreams, although people are often too fearful to even mention them.
The symbolism of death is most always a positive thing. There are some cases when it really means that death is going to happen, but it usually means the rebirth of something better.
There are many, many reasons why you might be dreaming about someone dying in particular. The subconscious mind stores all of our deepest emotions, and notably those things we do not want to face up to. Some theories state that dreams are nothing more than the loud thinking of the subconscious mind.
What is your subconscious mind trying to tell you?
Death as a symbol of something ending
Dreams of death, dying and the departed can be extremely scary dreams but, once understood, they can be most freeing and insightful. Death in dreams is symbolic of things that are coming to a close, or ending, in your life.
Many believe that dreaming about someone’s death is a bad omen and that it generally means that the person whom you’ve dreamed of dying is going to die in real life. Remember to look for symbolic meanings before you worry yourself thinking that all these types of dreams are premonitions.
“It is always imperative to know when something has reached its end. Closing circles, shutting doors, finishing chapters, it doesn’t matter what we call it; what matters is to leave in the past those moments in life that are over.” – Paulo Coelho
Dreaming about the death of the loved ones
Scientists say that dreaming of the dead suggests that you miss them and are trying to relive your old experiences you had with them, or represents the end of a relationship. Additionally, to dream about the death of a loved one suggests that you are lacking a certain aspect or trait that the loved one embodies. It can also signify that your feelings for that person are dead or that a significant change is occurring in your relationship with that person.
Dreaming about one’s parents dying is another frequent theme that is seen to make way. The most logical explanation of this dream is that you are scared of losing your parents. Having constantly worried about that, the thoughts have somehow been represented into your subconscious and made their way through as dreams of this nature.
In addition, if you dream of your mother dying could represent the ”death” (change) of the motherly side of your own nature. Maybe you should try to be more caring and maternal or perhaps plans you have should be nurtured rather than killed off. If you dream of your father dying, it may indicate your loss of authority.
To see an older relative or grandpa or grandma in a dream means that you need to try to listen to advice that people give you.
Dreaming about someone who has passed
First of all, since the people in your dreams often depict different aspects of yourself, then the person you see dead or dying is relevant to deciphering the dream’s meaning. So, you can ask yourself – what does this person represent to you?
If the person recently passed away in waking life, then this dream means that you are working through the standard phases of loss. It is essential to understand that you’re moving through stages of healing in the direction of inner peace.
Furthermore, after the person’s death, it’s usual to have a reunion dream where the person is kind, loving, and forgiving. What is happening in this type of dreams is that you are the one doing the loving and the forgiving of the other person, and loving and forgiving yourself for having done the best you could do.
But what about if you die in your dream?
Death is one of the most deeply scary concepts most individuals will confront with (the fear of death is the root of all fears), and there are times when it is this fear that your dreams will be reflecting.
“The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.” – Mark Twain
Death in a dream can also be translated into your own fear of death. Think about what it is you are afraid of within the dying process or within death itself.
It is worth remembering that regardless of your belief system, death is usually not an absolute end. Whether you believe in an immortal soul that lives on and either migrates to a heavenly existence or returns to physical plane in another form (i.e. transmigration of the soul or reincarnation), or that we are simply creatures made up of matter and energy (which has no beginning and no end, and can neither be created nor destroyed, only change form) then we can see that death is really a moment of transition.
