The video shows tourists looking at and taking pictures of this magnificent gentle giant sitting in the send.
A woman is just looking with amazement at the leatherback turtle trying to reach the waters, while a man excitedly shoots picture after picture.
The good thing is that they are maintaining their distance and respecting the animal, as it’s slowly leaving the beach.
After a few strong pushes – and a couple of rest breaks – the leatherback reaches the lapping waves and pushes itself into the sea until it disappears.
The clip – filmed in an unknown location – was uploaded to Facebook by Detroit DJ Robin Michael with the caption: “The biggest turtle I have ever seen!”
Leatherback Sea Turtle — A Gentle Giant
Leatherbacks are the largest turtles on Earth, growing up to seven feet long and exceeding 2,000 pounds. These reptilian relics are the only remaining representatives of a family of turtles that traces its evolutionary roots back more than 100 million years. Once prevalent in every ocean except the Arctic and Antarctic, the leatherback population is rapidly declining in many parts of the world.
A decline in the creature’s population has seen several conservation laws crop up in countries around the world.
The turtles mainly inhabit the Atlantic and Pacific oceans near the equatorial line with many to be found off the coast of Central America.
The reason the reptiles crawl out of the water during nesting season is to dig nests and lay their golf ball-size eggs in the sand.
