The so-called Flower Moon is going to rise tomorrow. Why is the Full Moon from May called like this?
This year saw some pretty spectacular celestial happenings, from the total lunar eclipse to the trio of Super Moons. Moreover, there are many other events than 2019 is going to witness, and one such unbelievable astronomical even is the Flower Moon. The Full Moon happening tomorrow is also called the Blue Moon, and it is a breathtaking sight which is not going to appear in the next two years.
The Blue Moon of May is going to reach its intensity between the 18th and 19th of May. This Blue Moon is going to rise in the skies of the United Kingdom on Saturday evening, somewhere around 10.21pm BST.
Moreover, the arrival of the moon is going to be at the same time as the Full Moon of May, which people commonly call Flower Moon. Also, stargazers are supposed to catch a glance of the Blue Moon of this month, as another such wonderful even is not going to happen in the following two years.
What, in fact, is the Blue Moon?
Blue Moons rarely appear blue during the night, but they can sometimes be. The present-day understanding of the Blue Moons phenomenon didn’t stick until somewhere in the 1980s.
We can actually witness Blue Moons in two types:
Seasonal Blue Moon – Three Full Moons happening in every season, but occasionally, a fourth one could also happen. When this actually happens, like in this year, then the fourth one is called the Blue Moon.
Calendrical Blue Moon – Well, similarly to the seasonal Blue Moon, when two different Full Moons occur in only one month, then the second one is called the Blue Moon. In order to complete one lunar cycle, the moon needs about 29.5 days.
This means that the first one of the month will happen at the beginning of the same month, while the second will return at its end.
Why the Full Moon of May has the name Flower Moon?
The Blue Moon which comes this weekend is a seasonal one, as it is actually the third one of the four such Full Moons taking place during the spring season.
According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, the Blue Moon, which comes is going to be a Flower Moon. In fact, it states:
“During Native American and Colonial times … the May full moon marked a time of increasing fertility, with temperatures warm enough for safely bearing young, a near end to late frosts, and plants in bloom.”
Although some communities gave her the name Flower Full Moon, it is commonly known as the Milk Moon, Corn Planting Moon, or Mother’s Moon too.
After the upcoming Full Moon, the following seasonal Full Blue Moon is going to return until midday on the 22nd of August, 2021. The last two Blue Moons happened on the 31st of March, 2018, and 31st of January, 2018.
The rarest thing of all this is the fact that the monthly Blue Moon and the seasonal Blue Moon appear in the identical year. This is going to occur in 2048, as in that time, the monthly one in January will be followed by the seasonal one in August.
This rare combination is going to repeat itself during 2067, with Blue Moons in November and March.
