The Perseid meteor shower is almost here! This meteor shower will be visible to us on 11th and 12th August, and NASA claims it will be the best meteor shower of the year!
The Perseid meteor shower is an event we witness every year, and this year it will be brighter than ever before. This trail is a part of the debris left behind by the Swift-Tuttle comet.
If you live in a place with a clear sky and no Moon visible during that specific time period, you can easily witness around 100 meteors swooshing by per hour.
Perseid started its journey this year on the 17th of July and will be visible till 26th August. 11th August marks its peak visibility and the most number of meteors. Stargazers can see the meteors best just before the sun rises.
Visibility will be highest between the hours of 2 am and sunrise. But the last quarter of the Moon might create some problems. Even with the Moon, NASA says one can spot 15 to 20 meteors shooting per hour under a clear sky.
If you cannot stay up all night, you can still see the Perseid meteor shower at 9 pm local time, but the meteors may not be too prominent.
If you manage to get a clear view of the sky with no clouds or moonlight, choose a spot with minimal lights. And the best thing about this shower is you won’t need any equipment! Just lie down on the ground and enjoy the view.
If you want to witness the true beauty of the Perseid meteor shower, stay away from your phone. Looking at any bright and artificial light will be an obstacle.
For those living in locations where the chances of witnessing this event live are not too high, you can simply join a live stream from NASA. Sky Fireball Network will also record the showers each night and put them up in the morning.
So get your snacks ready and mark your spot. The Perseid meteor shower is going to put up an excellent show!
