Here’s what you need to know about the May 19 astrological event.
If you’re familiar with the lunar cycle, you’re aware that the moon can go through a variety of phases and expressions. With all the different colors and variations the moon is capable of embodying, it’s as if it’s constantly swinging from mood to mood like a pendulum between Blood Moons and Supermoons, Blue Moons and so many more. As a result, it should come as no surprise that the moon is also available in “black.” All of these enigmatic nicknames that seem to adorn the capricious moon have lofty meanings, which is probably why you’re on the edge of your seat, wondering what exactly a Black Moon is.
What Does A Black Moon Mean?
A Black Moon, also known as a “Dark Moon” or even a “Lilith Moon” by some astrologers and witches, is a powerful and potent lunation because it represents yet another opportunity to plant new seeds and embark on a new beginning. The most common and widely accepted definition of a Black Moon is a second new moon that occurs within one calendar month, which explains why it was given that name. To put it simply, it is the polar opposite of a Blue Moon. With the moon spending more time alone than usual, it’s a month with more pitch black skies than usual. This is a relatively rare occurrence, occurring approximately once every 29 months.
A Black Moon can also refer to an extra new moon during one of our four seasons when there are four new moons instead of three. This is a more complicated version of the Black Moon that occurs every 33 months.
A rarely used but intriguing definition of a Black Moon is related to the month of February. A Black Moon is also referred to as a February without a new or full moon. It’s the shortest month of the year, so it’s natural for it to miss an important moon phase or two. This is the rarest of all black moons, occurring only once every 20 years. The following one is scheduled for 2033.
The Spiritual Meaning Of A Black Moon
While some may dismiss the Black Moon as a fun anecdote to tell during small talk, the spiritual and mystical among us take it more seriously. The new moon is a critical time for witches to set their intentions for the month, to begin anew with new goals in mind, and to cast a spell or perform a ritual that clears the slate. The Black Moon only amplifies this purifying energy, bringing your deepest strengths and desires to the fore.
According to renowned witch Skye Alexander, the Black Moon is also an excellent time to accelerate the manifestation of your spells and wishes. So, if you’ve been meaning to ask the universe for something big, the Black Moon is the perfect time.
Astrologers, on the other hand, have their own interpretation of what the Black Moon is all about. Some believe that the moon will bring out your darkest emotions, our scariest skeletons, and everything we keep hidden and would rather avoid. It’s a time for drama, because all of the negative emotions on the spectrum, such as envy, hatred, and revenge, will bubble to the surface. During this time, it is advised that we be patient and think twice before taking any risky actions. These unflattering emotions are the result of pain, and embracing them wholeheartedly will only breed more pain. However, they must be released at some point, and the Black Moon is here to assist with the process.
Some astrologers believe that the Black Moon will bring out all of our opposing qualities, as described by Carl G. Jung in his concept of the “anima.” So, in all likelihood, it will be a time when people will surprise each other.
When Is The Next Black Moon?
The following Black Moon is the second most rare of the three definitions, occurring once every 33 months. It will occur on May 19 at 11:53 a.m. ET, following the new moons on March 21 (right after the spring equinox) and April 20, and preceding the new moon on June 18 (days before the summer solstice) in the fixed earth sign of Taurus.
Since this month’s Black Moon takes place in Taurus, it can be incredibly beneficial to consider where Taurus is placed in one of the 12 astrological houses of your birth chart, in order to understand how you’ll be affected. Since eclipses take place in cycles, this first eclipse will likely catapult you into some major shifts over the next 18 months, so be sure to keep in mind the shifts you experience now. While change can oftentimes be scary, especially when it’s occurring in a sign that’s not a huge fan of change), it’s incredibly necessary for your personal growth. Be sure to use this Black Moon as a time to recharge your batteries and reflect on the growth you’re stepping into.
