The Equinox on September 23rd marks a turning point in the astrological year. Energy begins to shift in a new direction, directing changes, evolution, and growth.

Looking at the astrological year, the September Equinox marks the halfway point and marks the beginning of our descent through the chapter we have been working on. While we won’t reach the end of this journey until the March Equinox, we can reflect on how we got to this point and how we want the journey to end.

How do you want this chapter to end? What do you want to do with the rest of the story? You get to be the author here, and while we can’t always control what happens in our lives, the Equinox is a good time to speak up and tell the Universe, ourselves, and others what we need.

The Equinox and the Thinning Veil

The Equinox has long been regarded as a sacred time when the veil between the physical and spiritual worlds thins and the planet’s energy grid enters a higher vibration and harmony. The Equinox affects Mother Earth as a whole, and we may even see this with the changing of the seasons.

Nature is beginning to shed, release, and let go in the Northern Hemisphere. Nature is starting to bloom and blossom in the Southern Hemisphere. We can all feel this shift in energy coursing through our own lives, no matter where we live. We may discover that some things must be released while others bloom fully.

As the Equinox approaches, we will be able to see what we need to expand and what we need to contract. We can start to see what is most important to us, where we want to spend our energy, and where we want to put our intentions.

Spending intentional time outdoors in connection with nature can be extremely harmonizing and healing if we are feeling off balance or want to merge with the energies of Mother Earth.

The September Equinox and the Start of Libra Season

The September Equinox also marks the beginning of Libra Season, a zodiac sign associated with finding our balance and the flow between giving and receiving in our lives. Libra also represents the self within the other, which is essentially who we become in all of our relationships.

Do we like ourselves when we’re with certain people? Is it true that certain relationships bring out the best in us? Is it possible that certain relationships force us to grow by triggering our traumas and subconscious behaviors? Are there relationships that are simply enjoyable and remind us of our happiness? Are there any relationships that feel one-sided or that we have to maintain in order to stay professional or keep the peace?

Relationships are frequently our best teachers. We require them in order to thrive, grow, and understand who we truly are.

If you want to do some relationship work, the Equinox and Libra Season energies can be beneficial.

To get you started, here is a journal exercise:

Consider your closest, most profound, or most vexing relationship, and then consider the following questions. These questions can be tricky, so take your time with them. Follow your intuition or simply begin writing and see what answers emerge. These questions are not intended to be fully answered, but rather to awaken or spark new ideas or insights.

  • What do you believe this relationship is teaching you?
  • Do you believe this relationship is karmic or written into your soul contract? If so, what do you believe the ultimate goal is?
  • Could you be projecting or wishing for things to be different in this relationship?
  • In this relationship, are you truly listening and communicating clearly, or are you just assuming?
  • Is there something that needs to change in this relationship, and if so, can it begin with you?
  • In this relationship, how can you be your best self?
  • What aspects of yourself are suffocated in this relationship? What aspects of yourself are encouraged to thrive?

You can also perform this powerful Equinox Ritual:

Ritual for the Autumn Equinox

This ritual is ideal for letting go of the past, clearing negative beliefs or feelings, and preparing to welcome in the new.

Supplies:

  • Assorted Dried or fresh herbs (any will do, you can even use herbal tea)
  • Water Bowl
  • 1 Candle: white, yellow, green, brown, orange or red
  • Your favorite crystal
  • Pen and paper

1. Find a quiet place where you won’t be disturbed to perform this ritual. Place the candle next to your bowl of water and light it.

2. For a few minutes, meditate while holding your crystal to help clear and release your mind. Take five deep breaths in and five deep breaths out.

3. Place your herbs into the water. You can get creative here by using herbal teas such as chamomile. Just make sure to empty them from the tea bag first.

4. To generate energy, use your finger to stir the herb water 5 times in a clockwise direction.

5. Take a pen and paper and jot down what you want to let go of in your life.

6. Declare your intention to release three times aloud. Fold the paper and immerse it in the water.

7. Swipe your finger through the water three, seven, or nine times more. Keep an eye on how the paper becomes increasingly soggy.

8. Take the bowl and place it against the center of your heart. When you’re ready, say aloud “I release this” and dump the water. Dump the water outside, in the sink, or in the bathtub.

9. Remove the piece of paper. Throw the herbs away in the garden or outside.

10. Keep the candle burning as long as possible (but do not leave it unattended).

When performing these rituals, follow your intuition and your own guidance; they are designed to be simple so that you can adapt them in any way that feels right to you.
