Our second set of eclipses for 2023 arrives in October 2023, with a solar eclipse in relationship-minded Libra and a final lunar eclipse in Taurus.

What are they bringing us?

What exactly is a Solar Eclipse?

A new moon occurs when the transiting (moving) Sun and Moon are in the same Zodiac sign (called a conjunction). New moons are associated with beginnings, are full of energy, and are enthusiastic. When the New Moon is within 18 1/2 degrees of the Lunar Nodes (the points in the Moon’s orbit where the Moon crosses the ecliptic), a solar eclipse occurs.

What exactly is a Lunar Eclipse?

A full moon occurs when the transiting (moving) Sun and Moon are in exactly opposite positions in the Zodiac (this is known as an opposition). Full moons are associated with endings, climaxes, and emotional energy. When a Full Moon is within 18 1/2 degrees of the Lunar Nodes (the points in the Moon’s orbit where the Moon crosses the ecliptic), a lunar eclipse occurs.

Solar Eclipse in Libra: October 14th 2023 (1:55 p.m. ET/7:55 p.m. CET)

This solar eclipse occurs in Libra, and it is the first eclipse in Libra in quite some time. This eclipse focuses on relationships because Libra is the sign of relationships, and we can form new partnerships, agree to new alliances, and make new commitments. We can feel more at ease with commitment and want to commit to people and projects. We can see large partnerships and agreements being formed around the world, which may be for the sake of harmony.

Because Libra is the sign of peace, we can concentrate on bringing more peace into our lives and the world. This may be welcome after the last two eclipses, which were supercharged in the war signs of Aries and Scorpio, bringing more violence. This may come as welcome news in some parts of the world that have been plagued by war and violence this year.

Libra is the sign of balance, so we may want to devote more time to areas that have received less attention. We can work to develop more balanced perspectives and approaches, which will aid in keeping the peace and remaining calm.

The solar eclipse is conjunct (aligned with) Mercury in Libra, square (difficult aspect, three signs away) Pluto in Capricorn, and opposing Chiron in Aries. The conjunction to Mercury increases mental energy, brings new ideas that we are excited about, and opens the door to new communications. With this eclipse, we may be able to communicate in a more pleasant, diplomatic manner.

The square to Pluto is a different story, and Pluto may test us in areas where we are struggling. We may face opposition to our plans, and we may be overly discriminatory. We must keep compromise and diplomacy in mind and not succumb to lesser instincts in order to prevail. This can help if there is something else that needs to be transformed.

Because Chiron’s opposition can make us more sensitive, we must be careful to be pleasant in our communications. This eclipse has the potential for great healing, but it depends on us not succumbing to darker Pluto and being willing to dig a little deeper. Because Chiron is linked to health, we may see some health news with this eclipse that seems out of nowhere, out of control, so we must remain vigilant.

The solar eclipse occurs at 21 degrees 8 minutes Libra. The aspects to the solar eclipse are:

Conjunction: 16 degrees 8 minutes – 26 degrees 8 minutes Libra

Semisextile: 19 degrees 8 minutes – 23 degrees 8 minutes Virgo or Scorpio

Sextile: 16 degrees 8 minutes – 26 degrees 8 minutes Leo or Sagittarius

Square: 16 degrees 8 minutes – 26 degrees 8 minutes Cancer or Capricorn

Trine: 16 degrees 8 minutes – 26 degrees 8 minutes Gemini or Aquarius

Quincunx: 19 degrees 8 minutes – 23 degrees 8 minutes Taurus or Pisces

Opposition: 16 degrees 8 minutes – 26 degrees 8 minutes Aries

Lunar Eclipse in Taurus: October 28th 2023 (4:24 p.m. ET/10:24 p.m. CET)

The lunar eclipse occurs in Taurus, and it is the eclipse set’s third and final lunar eclipse in Taurus. We’ve had a lunar eclipse in Taurus every fall for the past three years, and this is the final eclipse.

Because lunar eclipses are associated with endings, we could be witnessing some major, massive endings with this eclipse. We’re shifting our focus, projects, and commitments, so now is the time to put the finishing touches on it and then let it go.

Taurus has been focusing on changes in what we require for stability and security, our values, what gives us confidence, and our resources. We can see changes in any of these areas, and they are most likely related to what has happened in the last two years.

We can benefit from grounding ourselves and remaining calm as we deal with the lunar eclipse. There’s no need to rush, worry, or push. With this eclipse, things may fall into place as they should (but not necessarily in the way we want them to).

The lunar eclipse is opposing Mercury in Scorpio and sextile (beneficial aspect, 2 signs away) Saturn in Pisces, so both eclipses aspect Mercury, which means we could be in for some big news, important information, or major communications. We can also put more emphasis on neighborhoods, communities, schools, and young people (all of which are ruled by Mercury).

The sextile to Saturn is beneficial, as it provides us with an extra boost of discipline and focus. We might make some progress with something we’ve been working on for a while and have some success. We may have more responsibilities now, but we can manage them effectively without becoming overwhelmed or crushed.

The lunar eclipse occurs at 5 degrees 9 minutes Taurus. Aspects to the lunar eclipse are:

Conjunction: 0 degrees 9 minutes – 10 degrees 9 minutes Taurus

Semisextile: 3 degrees 9 minutes – 7 degrees 9 minutes Aries or Gemini

Sextile: 0 degrees 9 minutes – 10 degrees 9 minutes Cancer or Pisces

Square: 0 degrees 9 minutes – 10 degrees 9 minutes Leo or Aquarius

Trine: 0 degrees 9 minutes – 10 degrees 9 minutes Virgo or Capricorn

Quincunx: 3 degrees 9 minutes – 7 degrees 9 minutes Libra or Sagittarius

Opposition: 0 degrees 9 minutes – 10 degrees 9 minutes Scorpio
