Scholars of philosophy and science, and even lay people have been fascinated by one question for thousands of years – When did mankind come into being?
All of us know the story of how Adam and Eve were created but is that where mankind began? Recently, there has been a lot of work saying otherwise.
Did man exist before the creation of Adam?
A diverse set of people have come forward and tried to prove that man or at least some kind of creature as intelligent as man existed on this planet before the creation of Adam. This concept is by no means a recent one. It was being debated as far back as 170 AD. The passage of time has seen many new arguments come up, seducing those who are governed by rationale and by romance to think critically about everything they have been taught to believe.
Christianity’s argument
Among those who follow Christianity as well as other religions, many do believe that mankind as we know it were not the first intelligent creatures to walk the Earth. The Bible clearly mentions certain incidents that happened in the past and will happen again eventually. It states that a new era of humanity will come forth every 7000 years. Scriptural evidence would have us believe that the earth is only around 6000 years old but science says otherwise.
It is not clear whether Adam and Eve were the first people to be created because Genesis is not a chapter that talks in specificities. If you take the story of Noah, it says that out of all mankind, only Noah and his kin were saved. It could be that this calamity bore a different Adam and Eve, thereby beginning a new cycle.
If we go back to the very beginning of Genesis, it tells us that the Earth lacked both form and void, exactly what it would have been like if a disastrous calamity had befallen it. The same text tells us that only water existed. In recent years, explorers have discovered whole cities submerged in the oceans.
While science often complements some of the events in the Bible, it is also entirely possible that there are some gaps in it because of the intense editing and translating that it has undergone over centuries. We might just be missing some essential parts of the tale it is trying to tell us.
Science’s argument
While it is believed that scientific thought and religious belief are complete opposites, we have seen that gulf being bridged in the past few years. For example, we have scientific proof that dinosaurs once existed. If you look at Job in the Old Testament, there is an indication that they were around when mankind came into being. However, some recent discoveries are well past the understanding of both science and religion.
Underwater civilizations have been found in various places, ranging from Jamaica to Egypt to China. The question they pose is whether there were cities and empires prior to Adam. Quite a few of those discovered revel a technological understanding that science says could not possibly have been in use so long ago.
A few think that a frozen city discovered in Antarctica might be the proof needed to prove the existence of pre-Adamite civilizations. The remains of bodies found there resemble mankind except for the oddly shaped skulls. They could have been a race that went into extinction well before the emergence of modern man.
Some would have us all believe that extra-terrestrials land here because their world had been destroyed. They paved the way for the rise of humanity.
With all these ideas floating around, there is nothing to do but keep pushing on in the hope of finding the right answers. With new discoveries being made almost every day, it is important to keep an open mind and look at everything critically till it passes muster.
