Similar to how our friendship levels reflect the depth of our relationships with those around us, the planetary systems also have varying degrees of closeness. The four basic dignities in astrology are domicile, detriment, exalted, and fall, which classify these clusters.
The fundamental dignities, similar to birth charts, are immutable. You can use your birth chart to see if any of your planetary placements are on the essential dignities chart; it is your chart from the moment of your birth.
As an example, my natal chart shows that my moon is in Taurus in the exalted sign and that my Neptune is in Capricorn in the fall. Be advised that not all planets have quadrant placements, so it’s possible that some of your planets won’t be visible in the four sacred identities. We will now explain the meaning of each placement now that you have them.
A Planet’s Domicile, or Home Position
When it comes to astrology, the zodiac sign that a planet rules over is typically referred to as its domicile. There is a distinction between this and the houses that are found in the horoscope.
Each sign is assigned a planetary ruler, which is a constellation in which the planet is said to exert a more powerful influence when it is positioned within that sign. If a planet is located in the sign that it rules, then it is said to be in a state of domal dignity.
In comparison to the other four essential dignities of a planet, this one is the most powerful.
- Sun: in domicile in Leo
- Moon: in domicile in Cancer
- Mercury: in domicile in Gemini, Virgo
- Venus: in domicile in Libra, Taurus
- Mars: in domicile in Scorpio, Aries
- Jupiter: in domicile in Sagittarius, Pisces
- Saturn: in domicile in Capricorn, Aquarius
- Uranus: in domicile in Aquarius
- Neptune: in domicile in Pisces
- Pluto: in domicile in Scorpio
A Planet in Detriment, or Exile
A planet is said to be in detriment, also known as exile, when it is located in the zodiac sign that is opposite the sign that it rules (more specifically, the sign that it has domicile over).
It is said that a celestial body that is in a detriment possesses a tendency to operate with the least amount of strength and that it does not feel comfortable in that sign.
- Sun: in detriment in Aquarius
- Moon: in detriment in Capricorn
- Mercury: in detriment in Sagittarius, Pisces
- Venus: in detriment in Aries, Scorpio
- Mars: in detriment in Taurus, Libra
- Jupiter: in detriment in Gemini, Virgo
- Saturn: in detriment in Cancer, Leo
- Uranus: in detriment in Leo
- Neptune: in detriment in Virgo
- Pluto: in detriment in Taurus
Exalted, or Exaltation of Planets
The exaltation of a planet is considered to be one of the four essential dignities of a planet in astrology. As opposed to the fall, which is a position of weakness in relation to the functioning of the planet, the exaltation is a place of awareness.
The sign position that is directly opposite the sign in which a planet is exalted is considered to be the planet’s fall position. The exaltation of each of the seven traditional planets is associated with a particular zodiac sign.
- Sun: exalted in Aries
- Moon: exalted in Taurus
- Mercury: exalted in Virgo
- Venus: exalted in Pisces
- Mars: exalted in Capricorn
- Jupiter: exalted in Cancer
- Saturn exalted in Libra
Fall, or Astrological Fall
Astrologically speaking, the sign that is directly opposite the sign of exaltation of a planet is considered to be the planet’s fall. This sign is known as an astrological fall.
In the same way that the exaltation is a place of awareness for the planet, the fall is a position of weakness with regard to the function of the planet, which includes everything else that the planet represents.
- Sun: in fall in Libra
- Moon: in fall in Scorpio
- Mercury: in fall in Pisces
- Venus: in fall in Virgo
- Mars: in fall in Cancer
- Jupiter: in fall in Capricorn
- Saturn: in fall in Aries
- Uranus: in fall in Taurus
- Neptune: in fall in Capricorn
- Pluto: in fall in Leo
What if I Have Planets in Fall or Detriment? Will I Be Unlucky?
Briefly, the answer is no! If you were born with a planet in fall or detriment in your birth chart, it may be a place in your life where you need to overcome challenges or a job that requires you to put in a little bit more effort than usual. On the other hand, that is not necessarily a negative thing! In order to develop one’s character, it is important to face challenges with dignity.
Rely on any planets in your astrological chart that are considered to be negative or fall. You can achieve the hard-won mastery you’ve been working toward over time if you get support and training, strengthen the muscle (think of it as cosmic physical therapy), and do all of these things.
And Is it Lucky to Have Planets That Are Exalted or Domicile?
You can use an exaltation as a planetary prompt to shine more brightly into the world. It gives you the ability to draw upon a reserve of strength at any time, either in the form of natural gifts or leadership abilities. However, due to the fact that you have access to this limitless wellspring, there are times when you might not be aware of the power that you possess. If you want to avoid overwhelming people with all that energy, be careful!
You may be able to exude a balanced or neutral energy with the assistance of a domicile planet. Every aspect of your life that is governed by that planet is where you feel “at home.” Due to the fact that the planet is currently located in its natural habitat, you have access to a more potent version of its magical abilities. Be mindful when you use them.
