Human beings spend almost their entire lives within the world of the mind.
Through thoughts, they interpret themselves and the world around them. The mind is constantly commenting, evaluating, comparing, planning, fearing, hoping, and remembering. This continuous inner activity has become so natural that most people completely identify themselves with it. They believe that they are this stream of thought.
- If the mind is restless, they say, “I am restless.”
- If the mind is afraid, they say, “I am afraid.”
- If the mind suffers, they say, “I am suffering.”
Rarely does the question arise: Who is the one who notices all of this?
The entire drama of the world unfolds within the realm of the mind. Everything we call reality, together with thoughts, perceptions, and emotions, appears within the field of awareness. This does not mean that the world does not seem real. It means that every experience exists only within consciousness. Yet human beings become completely immersed in this play and lose themselves in the flow of thought.
The mind itself, however, is not the enemy. It is necessary for practical life. It helps us navigate the world, communicate, work, and make decisions. The problem is not the mind itself, but identification with it. A person does not merely use the mind; they become completely fused with it. It is as if an actor became so absorbed in a role that they eventually forgot they were not actually the character they were playing.

Spiritual realization, therefore, is not about destroying “the mind.” It is about recognizing that you are not “the mind.” Simply observe “the mind.” Become a witness to its activity. When a person truly begins to do this, something remarkable happens. They gradually notice that thoughts arise by themselves. They are not consciously manufacturing them. Thoughts come and go. Emotions come and go. Memories appear and disappear. The entire mental world is in constant motion.
And yet, something remains unchanged behind it all. Something observes this movement and notices the thoughts.
This realization is the first crack in the wall of identification. For when a person truly understands that they are not the mind, the entire world loses its former absolute reality. Thoughts continue to arise, life continues to unfold, but the total identification is no longer there. Gradually, one begins to see that the whole mental world is merely a temporary state.
The teachings of Advaita point even deeper than this. They say that your true nature was present even before the birth of the body and mind. Before consciousness identified itself with this body-mind package, there already existed an untouched, motionless reality.
This is extremely difficult for the mind to comprehend because human beings tie their entire sense of existence to the body. They feel, “I am this body,” and “I begin here and end here.”
Yet the body is only a temporary form within consciousness.

This is why it is important to relinquish your attachment to this worldly dwelling place called the body. This does not mean hating the body. It means recognizing that excessive attachment to it sustains the illusion of separateness. Nearly all human fears arise from this attachment. People fear the loss of the body, aging, illness, and death. Meanwhile, they completely forget that their true nature is not limited to this transient form.
Advaita goes even further. It says that one must also relinquish attachment to existence itself, to the mistaken concept of existing as a separate entity.
This is an extraordinarily profound spiritual realization.
For human beings identify not only with the body but also with the feeling “I am.” They love their existence as a separate individual. Yet even this sense of existence is merely a temporary appearance within the infinite silence of the Absolute.
The world, however, is completely immersed in this temporary state of being. Every living creature instinctively protects and preserves itself. Worms, birds, animals, and human beings all know how life functions. Life takes care of itself. The universe functions. Existence flows.
This is why Advaita asks: Why do you cling so tightly to this temporary life?
Human beings are deeply hypnotized by their personal stories. They feel that this brief life possesses tremendous importance. Yet according to the teaching, there is no ultimate truth within this illusion. Everything changes. Everything passes away. Everything appears and disappears.
Personal life is only a brief ripple on the surface of consciousness.
What matters, therefore, is to become established in the Eternal. To enter that state that is beyond all of this, prior to all of this, and untouched by all of this.
This is not some distant place or mystical dimension. Rather, it is the recognition that your true nature has always remained untouched behind every experience.
Thoughts come and go. Emotions come and go. The body comes and goes. The entire world comes and goes.
Yet something behind all of this remains unchanged and ever-present.
And you can truly become established in this ultimate reality only when you no longer doubt your deepest nature.

This is why the teaching says that you will become established in the Ultimate only when you possess the firm conviction that you are the Supreme.
This is not a statement of ego. It is not the person claiming to be special or superior. Quite the opposite.
It is the recognition that your true nature is not the limited individual but the boundless reality of consciousness within which the entire universe appears.
And when this is deeply realized, a person no longer loses themselves in the game of the mind.
The story of life continues. The world continues to move. The mind continues to think. But the inner identification gradually dissolves.
Behind it remains a profound, motionless silence that can no longer be shaken by any phenomenon whatsoever.
