Look up, stargazers!

This long-duration comet, with its extended journey, is set to make its nearest pass to Earth this Fall, after which it will vanish into the depths of the outer solar system for another millennium.

After months of silently gliding through our solar system, Comet Lemmon is slowly preparing for its spectacular reveal—a unique appearance we won’t see again for another 1000 years.

In the past month, Comet C/2025 A6 (Lemmon) has been brightening at an impressive rate as it nears its close encounter with the Sun. This has sparked increasing excitement, with hopes that it may become visible to the naked eye by mid- to late October.

Comets in our solar system often ramp up their activity and brightness as they approach perihelion, the point in their orbit when they are closest to the Sun, and Comet Lemmon is a perfect example of this phenomenon. The sun’s heat and energy work their magic on a comet’s icy deposits, turning them into a stunning gaseous central coma and tail. This tail, laden with dusty particles, reflects sunlight, crafting the breathtaking displays we admire through telescopes or gaze upon in the night sky.

Supermoon Season (October 2025 ’till January 2026): Mystical Lunar Adventure

On January 3, 2025, Comet Lemmon made its debut, discovered by the Mount Lemmon Survey, which utilizes a 60-inch telescope stationed on Mt. Lemmon in Arizona to explore the cosmos.

A single orbit around the Sun typically spans about 1,350 years. However, following its close encounter in November, the Sun’s gravitational pull will tighten the trajectory, shortening the orbit to approximately 1,150 years.

Since its discovery, Comet Lemmon has experienced a remarkable increase in brightness, soaring from magnitude +21.5 to around +5.7.

In perfect dark sky conditions, the green comet becomes increasingly visible to the naked eye. However, the glow of the waning gibbous moon may still pose a challenge for spotting it.

As it nears the Sun, it will shine more brilliantly than anticipated, showcasing a gentle green hue and a fine, ethereal tail as the solar wind strips away its icy exterior.

Discover all the essential details about the dazzling Comet C/2025 A6 Lemmon, including the best times and methods to catch a glimpse of it from our planet.

How to Spot Comet C/2025 A6 Lemon from Earth?

This is an opportunity you simply can’t overlook!

As the sky begins to darken after sunset, roughly 30 to 40 minutes later, direct your focus towards the west-northeast, using the Big Dipper as your guiding star. Consider bringing binoculars or a compact telescope to elevate your viewing experience, though the comet is expected to manifest as a subtle, fuzzy greenish glow.

When capturing photographs, choose for a long exposure to beautifully showcase the comet’s intricate tail, which has already begun to interact with the solar wind.

When will Comet C/2025 A6 Lemon be visible from Earth again?

The comet currently has an orbital period of about 1,350 years, but following its close encounter with the Sun, solar gravity has shortened it to 1,150 years.

Skywatchers will have to wait until the year 3175 to experience the mesmerizing greenish hues of Lemmon again, marking this as a truly once-in-a-lifetime event.
