The Mandela Effect is one of the most mind-boggling phenomenons to date.

The Mandela Effect is a collective misremembering of a fact or event. Various theories have been proposed to explain what causes it, some more sensible than others.

This phenomenon is referred to as “The Mandela Effect” due to the fact that thousands of people recall Nelson Mandela having died in prison in the 1980’s, well before his actual death on December 5, 2013.  People claim to remember having seen news reports of his death in the 80’s, including funeral processions and talks of book rights involving Mandela’s widow.  There are theories suggesting it was a hoax or that people are simply mis-remembering these events, but those that claim to have seen the reports in the 80’s insist that they are remembering correctly.

Some people say that the Mandela Effect is a question of quantum physics and multiple dimensions where we are all experiencing things differently.

The effect is somewhat different from a false memory as it effects large groups of people, seemingly without many connections and without the same emotional factors present. It also seems stronger and harder to escape the feeling that it’s simply a mis-remembering of a detail, which is why people are so adamant with claims of their memories.

There are a couple of main theories surrounding the cause of the Mandela Effect.  The first being the simple fact that our memory isn’t what we think it is and we perceive things erroneously to compensate for easy processing, the second is a parallel universe crossing timelines with us, which some feel may be due to CERN.

• Nelson Mandela Died in Prison?

  Nelson Mandela died in prison, long before his loss on December 5th, 2013.Many people — perhaps thousands — seem to believe that.

  That’s where the title “ The Mandela Effect“, came from.See, I thought Nelson Mandela died in prison.  I thought I remembered it clearly, complete with news clips of his funeral, the mourning in South Africa, some rioting in cities, and the heartfelt speech by his widow.

• “Luke, I Am Your Father”

Most of you have seen Star Wars and most of you remember that scene at the end where Luke faces Vader and we all remember Vader saying to him : ““Luke, I Am Your Father”

• “Life is like a box of chocolates”

Again most of you have seen Forest Gump and that famous quote which Tom Hank says “ life is like a box of chocolates” , most people will agree that this is the actual quote , well have a look at the video below and you will see that we have all been wrong about it.

• The Berenstain/Berenstein Bears

  You might remember reading The Berenstein Bears books or watching the cartoon when you were little.For most of us, the family of bears were a beloved part of our childhood, so you might be shocked to find out that we’ve been spelling their name wrong the entire time.  We’ve been referring to the series as The Berenstein Bears throughout this post, which probs seemed totally normal to you if you’re familiar with the series. BUT that’s not right. The actual correct title of the series is The Berenstain Bears — with an A.
  There’s a popular picture circulating around the web thanks to believers of this theory that they claim to be scanned from an actual book with the “Berenstain” spelling, which they say proves the theory:

But others have insisted this popular image is fake because photo forensics proves it’s photoshopped.

• 51 or 52 United States?

  Many people recall the United States including 51 or 52 states, not 50.

  The interesting point is that the memories are fairly consistent, and include Puerto Rico as a state. One teacher suggested this is a common misunderstanding. The daughter of a teacher said that she clearly recalls her mother teaching students that the 52 states included Puerto Rico.

  So, is this simple confusion or a glimpse into alternate geography in another timestream?

• Curious George

  

  In real life, almost everyone I’ve surveyed remembers Curious George with a tail.

  Most usually know he was a chimp (though some books said he’s a “little monkey”), so he shouldn’t have had a tail… but they have specific memories of him with a tail.

  That’s an interesting alternate memory. I did a fairly thorough search of Google Images, and found nothing showing Curious George with a tail. (If I overlooked an actual Curious George image with a tail, let me know.)

  But, that’s not the only interesting (I almost said “curious”) thing about this particular memory.

  It’s also the first where I’ve seen people pause and say, “Wait. I remember him with a tail, but I can also see him without one. How can that be…?”

• Looney Tunes or Looney Toons

Recently, after people had raised “Looney Toons” as an alternate memory, something odd happened: People report seeing “Looney Tunes” (the actual name) change to “Looney Toons,” at many websites, just for a day or so.

For example, on 28 Nov 2015, Emily said, “Hey guys…. Looney Tunes changed again. Just last week it was Looney Toons…” (“Last week” would have been Nov 15th – 22nd.)

Ordinarily, I’d dismiss that kind of report as a brief and localized issue — usually a print media error, or a typo in a digital TV show listing.

• Mirror, Mirror, on the Wall

  Actually: It’s both “Mirror, mirror, on the wall…” AND “Magic mirror, on the wall..”

  In the 1937 Disney classic, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs the Evil Queen utters the famous line “Magic mirror, on the wall – who is the fairest one of all?”.

  It has not changed. There is no credible evidence to support that it has.

    Who in this land is fairest of all?
    I, like many others also believed “mirror, mirror” to be correct. It’s the version of the phrase that I always said when referencing it. This Mandela Effect is unique in a way because in this case, it’s actually correct or incorrect, depending on the context. Both “magic mirror” and “mirror, mirror” are correct depending on the source.
