Are you hoping to improve the quality of your sleep? Our sleep quality impacts many different aspects of our lives, so it’s no surprise that many of us are worried about not getting the kind of sleep we need to thrive.

Did you know, however, that yoga can help you in this endeavor? It’s true! Performing yoga before you go to sleep can actually improve your sleep quality by quite a bit. Let’s take a closer look at four great benefits of going through a relaxing yoga routine before bed.

1. Improved Sleep Quality

One of the main reasons to perform yoga before bed is to improve the quality of your sleep. Yoga does this via its meditation and mindfulness aspect. When you move through your yoga routine and focus on your body and the way it reacts to your movements, you’re actually putting yourself into a place of relaxation. The slow, often languid movements of yoga combined with the mind-clearing properties of the activity combine together form the perfect storm of sleep conditions. You’ll get ready for bed already relaxed and ready to fall asleep.

2. Relieve Stress

Stress is essentially the polar opposite of a great night’s sleep. It keeps us up, it ruins our REM sleep, and it makes it harder overall to relax long enough to get any sort of significant benefit from sleep at all. This is where yoga and meditation come into play! Yoga is a fantastic stress reliever that actively encourages your mind and body to calm down and shove worries away from your mind, if only for a short while. That means that you’re giving your body and mind the go-ahead to relax and rest and are actually promoting great sleep before you ever get to your bed.

3. Reduce Pain

Pain is one of the top reasons people have trouble sleeping. It can significantly impact your ability to wait patiently during the day, much less to fall asleep at night. Luckily enough, yoga happens to be a great option for pain management. It’s a commonly used supplement to more traditional pain relief programs, in fact, and can sometimes help provide relief even when medication can’t. A gentle yoga routine before bed can help your body and mind relax and work through the pain it’s feeling. This helps you fall asleep more quickly and can even keep the pain away while you get a decent night’s rest.

4. Improves Rest Appreciation

Do you enjoy your sleep, or do you push bedtime as far away as you possibly can? Many people fall into the latter category, and it can create serious issues for their health. Yoga, believe it or not, can help! The activity helps you appreciate the quiet moments in life and helps open your mind to the idea that sleep is a good thing, not a bad one. It doesn’t keep you from living your life – it sustains you.

Are you ready to see what yoga can do for you?
