You’re transforming your pain into strength.
If you’re new to astrology, you might be unfamiliar with Chiron. And, while it’s tempting to dismiss this lesser-known celestial body, you’d be doing yourself a disservice. For one thing, it can describe some of your deepest insecurities and sensitivities, which is one of the reasons why Chiron will be retrograde for the rest of 2023.
This astronomical object, which was previously thought to be an asteroid, is now officially the first identified “Centaur.” The reclassification is entirely appropriate, as Chiron was the name of a famous centaur in Greek mythology. In fact, he was a teacher and healer who mentored great warriors such as Jason and Achilles. Despite being referred to as the “wisest and justest of all the centaurs” in Homer’s Iliad, Chiron was unable to heal himself. He could teach the greats and prepare them for battle, but he couldn’t heal himself after being accidentally wounded by his student Hercules, eventually giving up his immortality for Prometheus’ release.
Chiron’s astrological significance is directly related to his influence on Greek mythology. Looking at your Chiron’s zodiac sign and astrological house will reveal the nature of your deepest wounds—both physical and psychological—and where you sustained them. The beauty of your Chiron placement is that it also describes your deepest empathy and your ability to heal others. After all, it is only by going through a painful experience that you can gain direct knowledge of how that experience feels, making it easier to help others who are going through similar problems.
Since 2018, Chiron has been transiting through passionate and aggressive Aries, where it will remain until it enters Taurus in 2026. Chiron has been encouraging us to heal our identities, reclaim our voices, and fight for who we are and what we stand for throughout this time. It will also mend our bruised egos by showing us how to go for wins without obsessing over the losses.
Chiron will station retrograde on July 23 at exactly 19 degrees Aries, allowing us to look at some of our failures with renewed love and light. While it could be picking at old wounds, it could also be because those wounds are healing incorrectly. You may need to return to the source of the pain to determine what is required to treat it at its source. Allow yourself enough time to find the right medicine, whatever that may be. This retrograde period will last until December 26, giving us plenty of time to reflect on these healing developments. Fear not, this retrograde is far more terrifying than it appears. In fact, the experience may feel like the long-awaited hug. Let us not forget that the glyph for Chiron in astrology is very similar to a key. It could be thought of as the key to your heart.
Here’s what you can expect from Chiron retrograde 2023, based on your sun and/or rising sign (and seriously, you’re missing out if you don’t read these rising sign horoscopes):
How Chiron Retrograde Will Affect Each Zodiac Sign
Aries (March 21 – April 19)
Chiron retrograde may affect you deeply and intrinsically. In fact, you may be healing whatever has been preventing you from fully embracing your identity. As Chiron transits your first house of the self, you may spend time getting to know the real you and letting go of what has felt like an inauthentic expression of your truth. There has never been a better time for self-love, so begin each day with a healing pep talk in the mirror. You are not only learning to forgive yourself and let go of shame, but your very presence will inspire others to do the same.
Taurus (April 20 – May 20)
Taurus, it’s time to look inward. In fact, you’re going so deep that you may be healing parts of yourself that you’re not even aware of. You’re feeling compelled to tap into the feelings and emotions lurking beneath the surface as Chiron retrogrades through your 12th house of spirituality and subliminal energies. You may have been wondering why you feel the way you do, as if your sadness is unfathomable. However, Chiron retrograde will show you that sadness does not require a reason, allowing you to feel it and heal it.
Gemini (May 21 – June 20)
You, like everyone else, want to be liked by others. However, you may be feeling disconnected from the rest of the world, as if you’re alone with your hopes and dreams. Chiron retrograde may be what cleanses your perspective by revealing how much you’ve healed not only others, but yourself. You’re letting go of the ego that has kept you from connecting because you see the difference you can make when you put yourself out there and lead the way.
Cancer (June 21 – July 22)
Cancers thrive on being excellent providers, but they are also prone to imposter syndrome. With Chiron retrograde in your 10th house of career and media image, you’re learning to accept the success you’ve earned and accept responsibility for projects you haven’t prioritized. You are your harshest critic, so remember that not everyone has the same high standards as you. The fact that you have standards at all is already a good sign.
Leo (July 23 – August 22)
You may feel as if you’ve lost your way and don’t know what to believe in anymore. Because Chiron is retrograde in your ninth house of wisdom, expansion, and journeys, it will reorient your inner compass. You may realize that you are hungry for something out of this world and contrary to your daily experiences. This retrograde will assist you in finding those answers within yourself, as well as healing what has been holding you back from embarking on some of the adventures you’ve always desired.
Virgo (August 23 – September 22)
You may be feeling more guarded than usual, especially if you believe you revealed too much information to someone. You may even feel duped, as if you made an investment that did not pay off. In any case, Chiron is about to retrograde through your eighth house of merging energies and shared resources, assisting you in working through your reluctance to put your faith in something. This could be a very transformative year for you, so embrace the process of releasing the shame associated with your deepest, darkest secrets.
Libra (September 23 – October 22)
When love and hate are so close, it’s difficult to feel like you’re on the same side as someone. As Chiron transits your seventh house of partnerships, you’re reflecting on the rejections, disappointments, and betrayals that may be affecting your future outlook on collaboration. This retrograde will aid in the healing of codependent tendencies as well as the nurturing of wounds that may be causing avoidant behaviors. As you let go of inhibiting patterns, you become a more powerful ally to someone else.
Scorpio (October 23 – November 21)
You may feel as if your energy reserves are running low, and if not replenished, you may experience executive dysfunction. If you’ve let the order and wellness of your life slip, Chiron retrograde will help you heal what’s keeping you from nurturing yourself. Taking care of ourselves is more difficult than it appears, especially if you’re struggling to keep up. As Chiron transits your sixth house of work and health, it will assist you in letting go of the shame that is at the root of your procrastination.
Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21)
You may be finding it difficult to enjoy the pleasures and creativity in your life, especially if you’ve recently been heartbroken. If your heart is still healing, Chiron retrograde may assist you in processing and integrating some of these love and loss lessons. As Chiron moves backward through your fifth house of romance and self-expression, it prepares you to transform your painful experiences into brilliant art. It’s time to color outside the lines and fall in love without fear of failure to heal your soul.
Capricorn (December 22 – January 19)
During Chiron’s retrograde, you may experience some insecurities, particularly in your personal life. As the “wounded healer” directs your fourth house of home and family toward inner healing, you may reflect on some of the pain you’ve been holding onto that you don’t have to anymore. Some of your early childhood experiences, as well as those of other family members, may have instilled beliefs in you that are not always your own. This retrograde will assist you in distinguishing between your beliefs and those of others.
Aquarius (January 20 – February 18)
Using the wrong words and exchanging messages that obscure the truth can have a negative impact on your happiness. With Chiron retrograding through your third house of communication, close friends, and day-to-day administrative activities, you are inspired to speak your truth with vulnerability. It demonstrates how to manage your inbox, but it also demonstrates how to stop shaming yourself if you don’t respond to an unimportant text message right away. You’re ready for genuine communication, not phony communication. And believe me, people will want to hear you.
Pisces (February 19 – March 20)
You’re learning to distinguish between what you want, what you require, and what you’ve been told you should have. You’re going inward and healing your imposter syndrome as Chiron retrogrades through your second house of money and self-worth. It’s time to accept that you are deserving of good things. It’s time to accept that you don’t need an expensive product to improve your life. Discover the values and possessions that truly provide you with self-esteem, because they will support and bolster you like nothing else.
