Astrological New Year: Kick Off a Wave of New Potential

Certainly not in the month of January.

The idea of celebrating the new year in the dead of winter seems paradoxical. This is the time of year when bears are still hibernating, so it makes you wonder when the actual “New Year” happens. Why should we expect to feel energized about our goals when nature is still resting on January 1? When else can one rejoice in the beginning of a new year?

There must be more going on than just a lack of motivation if you aren’t in a rush to get things done the moment December 31st rolls around. Many of us fail spectacularly at our New Year’s resolutions almost immediately, even though the pressure to tackle your goals and improve yourself feels more intense than ever. This is partly because winter is actually the slowest time of year. If you find yourself wanting to sleep in again the moment you open your eyes on January 1, you are actually more in sync with the natural world’s rhythms than you may think. Consider that winter is a time for resting, sleeping, and fantasizing rather than beating yourself up for not exercising first thing in the morning, avoiding sugar, and picking up a plethora of new skills at the drop of a hat. You can’t act like spring when you’re really in the middle of winter.

When Does the Real “New Year” Take Place?

January 1 is the official start of a new year, but there’s a long story behind why this date is more symbolic than grounded in the natural world’s cyclical energies. Everything you wanted to know about the astrologically-supported superior timing of the “New Year” celebration is right here:

Why Is New Year’s Celebrated in January?

Where you are and the culture you are a part of determine the exact date that New Year’s is celebrated. For instance, the Persian New Year is celebrated on March 20, the date of the spring equinox, and the Lunar New Year is observed at some point between January 21 and February 20, as is customary in both cultures. Numerous sources, including astrological, agricultural, and religious ones, attest to the accuracy of each date. Since the Gregorian calendar begins on January 1 and ends on December 31, the majority of the world’s celebrations take place on this date.

It may come as a surprise, but the practice of celebrating the new year on January 1 is actually quite recent. In 1752, the practice was formally instituted in the American colonies and Great Britain. March 25 was previously observed as the Feast of the Annunciation, a time when Christians and Catholics around the globe commemorate the incarnation of Jesus Christ within Mary’s womb.

Why Is the Real ‘New Year’ in March?

It is well-known among astrologers and spiritualists that the New Year has traditionally been celebrated at the start of spring. This tradition dates back thousands of years. When the sun moves into Aries, marking the beginning of a new year according to the zodiac’s cyclical transitions, the spring equinox also occurs at this same moment. Spring is more closely associated with the idea of beginning anew and pursuing one’s dreams because of its symbolic meaning. After all, the melting of winter’s ice ushers in a new season of renewal and growth, as do seeds that are dormant all winter long. When the bears emerge from hibernation in the spring, they are ravenous once again, and the haunting silence of winter gives way to the sweet sound of birdsong.

Keep in mind that the initial sign of the zodiac, Aries, is linked to being motivated, assertive, taking action, and having a clear direction. During the Aries season, we experience a surge of energy and receptivity to change, and we are prepared to pursue our dreams with the utmost determination. The natural world has been asleep all winter, so our forward movement in the spring is actually crucial to life.

I propose that you put your New Year’s resolutions on hold until 2024’s spring arrives on March 19 at 11:06 p.m. ET or March 20 at 5:06 a.m. CET, when the sun enters Aries, if you’re already having problems sticking to them. Until then, feel free to return to hibernation and give yourself a break. The colder months call for it.
