Full moons, and more especially lunar eclipses, are the astrological events that are sure to produce the most dramatic effects.

An eclipse of the moon happens four times a year and is essentially a supermoon. The spiritual and personal significance of a lunar eclipse is typically readily apparent, particularly when seen in hindsight, in contrast to Mercury retrograde, which frequently brings about plot twists that don’t really amount to anything.

If you want to take your relationships to the next level or reach a major milestone in a long-term project, you can take advantage of the once or twice monthly full moons to do ritual work related to letting go of what is no longer serving you. Your sole responsibility, however, is to fully embrace the transformations and adjustments that a lunar eclipse brings about, since their astrological effects are so powerful and amplified.

Two lunar eclipses will occur in 2024, the first in the air sign Libra and the second in the water sign Pisces, marking the beginning of an eclipse series not seen since 2015–2017. Lunar eclipses often bring to light shocking changes in our personal relationships, so it’s a good idea to get ready for some shocking changes now.

You may also see shifts in your approach to financial success, self-perception, value system, empathy, and emotional and spiritual healing as a result of this major astrological and astronomical event.

Continue reading to learn what a lunar eclipse is and how it impacts the zodiac, as well as which signs will be most starkly affected in the year 2024.

What Is a Lunar Eclipse?

From an astronomical perspective, a lunar eclipse happens during the moon’s full phase. When Earth’s shadow covers the moon, reducing its light and frequently causing it to take on a breathtaking red hue that lasts for a few hours, we say that there has been a lunar eclipse because Earth is directly between the moon and the sun. The three main categories of lunar eclipses are:

• Total lunar eclipse

As the moon approaches the umbra, the inner portion of Earth’s shadow, this phenomenon takes place. According to NASA, the moon will seem redder when there is more dust or clouds in Earth’s atmosphere at this time.

• Partial lunar eclipse

A partial lunar eclipse occurs when the moon moves through Earth’s umbra in an imperfect alignment with the sun and when the shadow cast by the Earth’s shadow does not completely cover the moon.

• Penumbral lunar eclipse

This type of lunar eclipse is the most delicate because the moon barely dims as it passes through Earth’s penumbra, its faint outer shadow.

Astrological Meanings of Lunar Eclipses

During a full moon, you can do things like make moon water, charge your crystals, or tune into a meditation. Maybe you’ve discovered that deep breathing, yoga, or visualization techniques help you manage the energy of the moment, even if you’re not at this level. However, lunar eclipses occur only around twice yearly, and according to astrology, the energy of a lunar eclipse is far stronger than that of a typical full moon.

In fact, you should avoid participating in any rituals that involve the moon during an eclipse because the energy is so heightened from an astrological and spiritual perspective. Imagine it as a powerful windstorm or bolt of lightning; it’s just too difficult to control, so you shouldn’t work with it too actively. No matter how much it ruins your carefully plotted plans, the best course of action is to just stand aside and let it happen. When the dust settles after an eclipse, you’ll have learned your lesson and may have even found a new way forward.

Experiencing a lunar eclipse can be particularly disruptive to your closest relationships. The moon rules over feelings in astrology, while the sun rules over one’s fundamental identity and sense of self. Consequently, your relationships, both internal and external, are the spiritual anchors of lunar eclipses. You may be encouraged to gain a clearer view of your own patterns, behaviors, or issues that manifest in your relationships when the moon is at its brightest and fullest while also fighting off a dark shadow, also known as an eclipse.

Be that as it may, not every lunar eclipse has the power to uplift your spirits and change your course of events. The interaction between the astrological event and your birth chart determines the outcome. If the eclipse is “hitting” your chart at a specific angle, you might feel its effects more acutely than usual. You can gain a better understanding of its potential effects by studying your natal chart, which includes not only your sun, moon, and rising signs but also the positions and angles of other planets like Mercury, Venus, and Mars.

2024 Lunar Eclipses Dates

Twice (and very rarely, three times) a year, there will be a lunar eclipse. The following dates will see a lunar eclipse in 2024:

  • Monday, March 25 at 3 a.m. ET: full moon penumbral lunar eclipse in Libra
  • Tuesday, September 17 at 10:34 p.m. ET: full moon partial lunar eclipse in Pisces

This first lunar eclipse of 2024 takes place in Libra, the cardinal air sign, and continues a tale that started on October 14, 2023, with a new moon and solar eclipse (the first component of a lunar cycle) in the sign of the Scales. Deep insights into your interpersonal relationships, your presence in your closest partnerships, and your pursuit of life balance will emerge from this partnership-focused event. Think about the ways in which the relationships you’ve been in have either bolstered or undermined your sense of self, and ask yourself if it’s time to cut ties with those one-sided relationships that aren’t healthy for you emotionally and spiritually.

As a mutable water sign, Pisces will host the second lunar eclipse of 2024, marking the first eclipse along the Pisces-Virgo axis since 2015-2017. (To get a feel for any themes that may be emerging for you at the moment, reflect on that period.) The twelfth sign of the zodiac, Pisces, is ruled by Neptune, the planet of spirituality, dreams, illusion, and delusion. Those born under this sign have a passion for helping others, finding creative ways to express their emotions, and finding solace in the depths of their own soul. Because of this, this eclipse may be a magical one where you learn exactly what you need from your relationships—spiritually speaking—to feel grounded on the inside. Now is the moment to rely on your gut feelings (rather than your head) when making decisions.

Lunar eclipses have different effects on each of the 12 zodiac signs as they move through them.

2024 Lunar Eclipses & the Zodiac Signs

Those born under the cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) will be most affected by the lunar eclipse on March 25, 2024, while those born under the mutable signs (Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces, Gemini) will feel its effects in September. But look at how each of the 12 signs is being impacted by them. Assuming you are aware of it, read your rising sign.

Aries (March 21 – April 19)

The lunar eclipses this year will help you reflect on your relationships with others and the steps you can take to improve your mental and spiritual health by activating Aries, your seventh house of partnerships and twelfth house of spirituality. When you take stock of the harmony in your one-on-one relationships in the spring, you’ll be asked to make a decision; when you look into what you need to nourish your soul and spirit in the fall, you might find yourself overwhelmed by emotions.

Taurus (April 20 – May 20)

Your health and social life will likely take center stage this year due to the lunar eclipses that will be affecting your sixth house of wellness and eleventh house of networking. You feel prompted to take stock of the ways you care for yourself on a daily basis in the spring. Making adjustments centered on any of these topics may prove to be a source of increased vitality. Think about the larger projects you’re interested in contributing to in the fall, and think about the teams and groups you’d like to be a part of, so you can establish a sense of belonging and affiliation.

Gemini (May 21 – June 20)

A first lunar eclipse of 2024 will illuminate your fifth house of self-expression and romance in the spring, which could encourage you to find a safe space to express yourself creatively and embrace your unique voice. Additionally, you may encounter exciting changes or shocking disruptions in your romantic life that make you reevaluate your approach to this aspect of your life. A second lunar eclipse in your tenth house of public image happens in the fall, so you’ll have to deal with changes involving power and authority, both personal and interpersonal. You can boost your self-esteem and attract positive attention by actively caring for your mental and emotional health.

Cancer (June 21 – July 22)

In 2024, lunar eclipses will occur in two very distinct areas of your birth chart: the fourth house, which represents your domestic life, and the ninth house, which represents your adventures and academic pursuits. The former prompts introspection about your emotional health, family history, and inner life; it will take center stage in the spring. Now is the moment to stop dwelling on the past and start making progress on the healing self-work you’ve been putting off. As the fall lunar eclipse moves into your ninth house, it’s time to broaden your horizons, connect with people you wouldn’t normally hang out with, listen to your intuition, and take a leap of faith.

Leo (July 23 – August 22)

With the lunar eclipse in Leo in your third house of communication this spring, you may find yourself in the midst of an exceptionally gregarious and energetic period. In addition to having a jam-packed social calendar, you may feel the need to immerse yourself in new information, communicate with friends and acquaintances, and express yourself creatively through writing or public speaking. You have a lot to discover about your learning and connection processes right now. Additionally, a lunar eclipse in your eighth house of relationships and shared resources in the fall might make you long for closer quarters with those you care about. Making money, investing, saving, and your relationship with your values and cash flow are all areas that will push you to think critically and openly about change.

Virgo (August 23 – September 22)

Lots of introspection regarding money, values, and personal relationships will be prompted by the lunar eclipses that are activating your second house of income and seventh house of partnership this year. In the spring, take stock of how you are making money and whether it aligns with your values. If that isn’t the case, you should probably cut ties with people who aren’t helping you achieve your financial and emotional goals. Perhaps you and your partner, family member, or business associate are about to embark on an exciting new chapter in your lives in the fall. Consider how you can maintain a healthy equilibrium between your individual aspirations and identity while collaborating effectively with another person.

Libra (September 23 – October 22)

Solar eclipses in 2024 will directly impact Libra, first in your house of identity and then, in the autumn, your house of health and wellbeing. By clarifying the most effective ways to show up in your relationships (and demand that others do the same), you can experience personal and partnership-related growth this spring. Changes in your passion projects and public persona may also be something you’re welcoming with open arms. You have an opportunity to focus on your health and wellness this fall with the lunar eclipse in your sixth house of routine and health. Think about how you can make small changes to your daily routine to feel more vital.

Scorpio (October 23 – November 21)

When the lunar eclipse in the spring lights up your twelfth house of spirituality, it’s a sign that you should listen closer to your gut, intuition, dreams, and imagination. Taking care of this aspect of yourself has a multiplicative effect on your health—mental, emotional, and physical. When the second eclipse of 2024 occurs in the fall, it will activate your fifth house, which is associated with romance and fun. This will give you the confidence to express yourself freely, embrace your artistic side, and tap into your full creative potential.

Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21)

The lunar eclipse in the spring will be in your eleventh house of networking, so think about the teams and organizations you’re a part of. Leaving a group in which you’ve invested so much of yourself may be necessary. Your intuition about the kind of friends and coworkers you want to surround yourself with and the ways in which these friendships could support your long-term goals has probably been honed over the last six months; now is the time to put that intuition into action. The fourth house of home life will be illuminated by the lunar eclipse in Pisces this fall, prompting you to confront any inner world emotional stressors that you haven’t resolved yet and which may have been limiting your progress. If you were looking to forge a new path in relation to your loved ones, your physical residence, your mental health, or your feeling of safety, making the decision to heal was the first step.

Capricorn (December 22 – January 19)

A new phase in your professional life is about to begin as the spring lunar eclipse activates your 10th house of career. It may be time to shine (which you’ll gladly accept), assume greater responsibility, take charge, or demonstrate how badly you desire that life-altering goal you’ve been bringing into manifestation. This should all come easily to you because of your inherent diligence, but eclipses are powerful and change can be unsettling for anyone, so brace yourself for an exciting journey. Furthermore, a lunar eclipse in your third house of communication this fall will inspire you to expand your horizons, meet new people, and perhaps even embark on a short-distance journey or spend extra time with loved ones. Now is the moment to put your social needs first and take care of them.

Aquarius (January 20 – February 18)

Eclipse of the moon in spring brings energy to your ninth house, which represents exploration and education. You have been encouraged to step outside of your comfort zone for the past six months. You have a vision for the future and are forward-thinking, but you have a tendency to be stubborn about how you want things done. It’s time to let go and see what else is out there; your perspective will be much enriched. A lunar eclipse in your second house of income this fall will put a spotlight on your strategies for generating income. If you want to know how to best put your money (or even your time and energy) into an endeavor that will generate income, you should listen to your gut, your emotions, and your spiritual needs. Think about how your skill set has been serving your financial and emotional objectives recently.

Pisces (February 19 – March 20)

Both your first house of identity and your eighth house of emotional ties are being activated by the lunar eclipses this year. Whether you’re attempting to advance a business proposal or negotiate a budget with your partner, it’s important to embrace changes pertaining to shared assets in the spring. Your flexibility and understanding of the importance of avoiding confrontation could be useful right now. Additionally, the initial eclipse of a new series on your axis will be welcomed in the fall. During this time, you may experience a range of emotions and find yourself reflecting on the strengths and weaknesses of your personal relationships and sense of identity. If you want to break free of limiting habits, you need to think about the image you want to present to the world.
