We’ve all read about how it can help us and even science has proved the wonder of the effects of meditation. Those who practice it are less likely to be depressed, have increased longevity and are also better in bed.
But many of us face a lot of issues when we try to do it. Below are a few of the problems that usually come up.
1. “I just can’t sit still for that long”
This can be a problem as your legs can cramp up if you’ve been sitting in the same position for too long. But it’s just a misconception that you have to sit with your legs crossed.
Just choose any position you are comfortable in and try to meditate for as long as you can. There’s no prescribed time you should meditate for so just go with what works for you.
2. “I can’t stop thinking”
It can be hard to make your mind go blank so instead, just acknowledge whatever you’re thinking about then let it go without any judgement.
Your brain will try to remind you of the 101 tasks you have to do in your daily life but don’t stop to analyze those thoughts. Let them flow naturally.
3. “I don’t want to be left alone with my thoughts”
Life can be hard and the harder it gets, the more we want to avoid thinking about it. We’re scared that we will find ourselves drowning inside our own heads if we focus for too long.
But if you do manage to place yourself inside your own mind, you’ll realize that it’s really not that scary. The difficult thoughts only become worse as we keep ignoring them. It is much better to just face them.
Try this method when you wish to meditate:
- Place yourself in a comfortable position. Keep your eyes closed and take deep breaths.
- Think about what you are feeling.
- Where is that feeling coming from?
- What does it look like?
You will be able to feel in a detached manner without any judgement. You will see those emotions as separate from you and your body.
Remember that your feelings can only hurt you if you allow them to.
