Cancer New Moon, July 2023: Into the Unknown

It’s shaping up to be a wild summer (astrologically speaking) because seven (yes, seven) planets are about to go retrograde. Although the chaos in outer space may appear to be far away, it always comes back to haunt (er, help) us. Another event in the sky that you should be aware of is the new moon in Cancer, which will occur on July 17.

So it won’t be as chaotic. The moon is obsessed with being in Cancer because it is the ruler of the crab’s sign, so it will be doing its thing and doing it well. Cancer represents home, family, and ancestry, bringing themes that are very personal and close to our hearts. We will have a strong desire to feel safe and secure as the luminaries conjoin in this sign. As nostalgia from the past returns to be remembered or fully processed, we should expect to feel emotional.

Cancer and the moon are both known for evoking strong emotions, so this is to be expected. We are better able to access our own emotional needs, nurture ourselves and others, and defend our sense of security during the Cancer new moon. This new moon, on the other hand, is built a little differently. What should be a relaxing time spent reconnecting with our inner world may feel more like a plunge into the unknown.

The days leading up to this lunar event should be spent resting and alone, as we need to allow ourselves to feel the full range of emotions that the new moon brings (and to prepare for the plunge). Big changes are on the horizon, and in order to move forward, we must first process the past.

While looking back to move forward may seem counterproductive, using the new moon energy to work through your past and reconnect with others will be an important step. Because the new moon in July represents new beginnings, it can be a good time to start collaborations or connect with others. The Cancer energy will make it simple to meet new people, network, and look for opportunities for cooperation and teamwork.

This new moon is in direct opposition to Pluto, the Planet of Destruction, which is currently retrograde in Capricorn. This means that power struggles or triangular situations will be brought to light, bringing to light relationship issues. On the other hand, if you allow yourself to let go and move forward, this can be very healing and cathartic. Remember that you have the power to make the best decisions for yourself.

We won’t sugarcoat it: this planetary opposition will cause some conflict during the new moon. We are receiving pushback on a deep psychological level due to fear of the unknown. It’s terrifying to fully embrace our power! Fortunately, the luminaries also form a sextile to Uranus and a trine to Neptune, assisting us in making the changes that will allow us to gain true courage in this process of reinvention. Trust yourself and ignore what others may think of you at this time. We will need to if we are to make our deepest dreams come true.

Another advantage is that the new moon will align with Neptune, the planet of compassion, forgiveness, spirituality, and illusion. This will create a calm environment in which to process any strong emotions or memories that arise. It will foster understanding between ourselves and others. We may feel safe sharing our feelings with loved ones.

You know that old emotional baggage you’ve been carrying around? Let that nonsense go. Because of Neptune’s influence, this can also signal the start of a new creative project or spiritual journey. We must first feel in order to heal, but once we’ve confronted what’s been lurking in the shadows, there is room for a beautiful and inspiring new beginning.

Remember that new moons represent new beginnings.
