A total solar eclipse occurs in Aries on April 20th (basically the Moon will blot out the Sun in the sky, making the world feel all dark and ominous for a bit).
This powerful lunation will usher in a new “eclipse season” in the 18th month, involving the Ram and Libra. That means that for the next year and a half, the majority of our eclipses will take place in one of these two signs.
Importantly, eclipse season is always associated with pairs. But not any old pair. Rather, it always involves energetically and astronomically opposing signs. For example, our eclipse season has alternated between Taurus and Scorpio over the last 18 months.
These two signs are physically 180 degrees apart on the zodiac wheel, but they are also symbolically opposed. Scorpio is ruled by Mars, while Taurus is ruled by Venus. Scorpio enjoys, while Taurus obsesses. Taurus is associated with wealth. Scorpio is associated with debt. Themes concerning spending or saving money were accordingly augured.
What can we expect from the new total solar eclipse?
A new eclipse season has arrived, along with a new set of opposites. The Ram (ruled by Mars) is self-centered and headstrong. Libra (ruled by Venus) is always looking to the other for harmony and balance. It’s easy to predict what kinds of themes will emerge over the next 18 months.
Indeed, Aries/Libra conflicts will revolve around balancing the ego and its drives (the Ram) with the demands of pair-bonding (the Scales). As a result, whenever we approach one of these lunar or solar eclipses (such as the upcoming one on April 20th), be prepared to encounter issues related to the infinitely complex dance of “what I need” vs. “the needs of a given partnership.” Deep loggerheads.
This isn’t to say that Aries/Libra tensions won’t continue to plague us and our professional and/or romantic relationships. We are always under stress, both with ourselves and with others. However, the Moon (inner emotions) and the Sun (outer self-presentation) will try to block each other out like bickering lovers on an otherwise lovely boardwalk during these upcoming eclipses.
Naturally, each upcoming eclipse will be slightly different due to other prominent transits influencing it. For example, on April 20th, we have a lot of energy in Aries: the Sun (exalted in the Ram) + the New Moon + Chiron (the wounded healer) + excessive Jupiter + the impact of the total solar eclipse itself.
With all of this hot and scratchy Aries energy, we may feel extra aggressive, ornery, or competitive. Because the Moon (emotion) will be blocking out the Sun (outer Self), we should expect outbursts that could harm one’s public image at work or online. As our Self/Sun is overshadowed by the tantrum-throwing Aries New Moon, we may feel overly harsh or angry with ourselves: an eclipse is essentially some inauspicious staging of selfhood that is momentarily lost, troubled, or disrupted.
A less virulent version of this transit around April 20th may instead indicate a need to be more active or make a bold but unilateral move at work. While such unilateralism is characteristic of Aries, it fails to account for the hidden lesson of eclipse season: you should consider how the other sign interacts with it. While you may want to act with heroism, you have companions in your life. They are not the dragon you must slay; rather, they are co-equals required for your own development.
The themes generated by an eclipse are said to last for about six months, until the next one in this pair occurs in Libra in October. With so many daily cosmic lessons generated by the movement of our planets, it may be difficult to remember the lessons of this particular solar eclipse over the next few months. If so, just keep it active in your awareness around the transit.
If, on the other hand, something about the meanings of this particular solar eclipse in Aries resonates with where you are in life (needing to avoid unilateralism, seeking more Libra balance in relationships, maintaining your public image), then use its energy to guide you until October, when episode two of this particular eclipse season airs next on our cosmic broadcast.
