We have let out world become one where looks and achievements are given more value than character and inner beauty. Down-to-earth and humble people are considered weak and flawed.
However, showing humility is a sign of strength and definitely not something to be ashamed of.
If you can learn to be humble, it will lead to achieving success in all the spheres of your life as well as inner peace and growth.
Here’s what humility represents, and how to cultivate it.
Why humility is important
Humility is important because it makes you become aware of other people’s value and qualities; it will also make you appreciate everybody for who they are. Once you realize that we are all different and we are all teachers to one another, you will recognize your own limitations and boundaries.
Slowly, material things will become meaningless to you and you will come to the realization that real happiness and satisfaction lie in your self, your family, your and their heath and inner peace.
How to be humble
Embrace the fact that you are human
Humility teaches us about unconditional acceptance. This is a process that should start in childhood. Parents and care givers should teach their children that they need to accept everything that comes along the way, whether it’s good or bad.
This teaches us to accept innate human values. By valuing humans according to their values and not external achievements we will be humble. Failure should be the engine that will propel us forward to success and progress and not as something that someone should be ashamed of.
Exercise mindfulness and self-compassion
Another crucial step on the way to developing humility is practicing mindfulness and self-compassion. Mindfulness will give you the chance to get into observer-mode and analyze and evaluate your thoughts. You’ll understand that you’re not defined by your superficial desires and you’ll learn to be accepting of your true self.
You will be able to know the areas of your life that need to be changed. And again through self-compassion, you will be able to correct yourself with respect and patience. You will not be hard on yourself but instead will be accepting and understanding.
Express your gratitude
Humble people are always grateful for the gifts they receive from others. Showing gratitude says that you are more focused on others than you are on yourself. If you acknowledge that all people go through hardship and pain and you will be less likely to judge.
Having higher opinion of others compared to yourself is the key to humility.
