On July 17, 2023, there will be a New Moon in Cancer spiraling into the universe, providing the ideal opportunity to reset under the transit.
Because the Moon (usually gendered feminine in astrological parlance) moves so quickly (it enters a new zodiac sign every few days), we tend to dismiss its transits as minor occurrences in comparison to the more significant movements of the Sun (gendered masculine) or, say, Saturn or Jupiter (both masc., too). It’s so patriarchal.
Let us fix this. Let us continue to celebrate the Moon. But first, let’s try to understand the distinction between the Sun and the Moon in terms of their astrological significance.
And to that end, consider the following: Consider Sun and Moon transits to be movie genres. The Sun is a gaudy, outrageous Hollywood blockbuster–big, obvious, and full of explosions. It captures our attention. It’s heavily promoted. It’s gleaming and gleaming. It’s a hit with the audience. It all comes down to appearance. It’s all about close-ups and big performances.
The Moon and its transits, on the other hand, are something more subtle, textural, and emotionally deep: like European cinema from the 1950s, 1960s, or 1970s. Renais’s “Hiroshima Mon Amour” comes to mind. A man (Japanese) and a woman (French) fall in love in the aftermath of WWII in the titular city. “Hiroshima Mon Amour” teaches the value of the ordinary–that small things, such as Moon transits, matter. It is not only the extraordinary and historical events that give our lives meaning.
A Moon transit is thus like a trace, a whisper, a secret, or a shared moment. Its value stems from its small size, brevity, and ephemerality. Remember the final scene of Sophia Coppola’s early August masterpiece “Lost in Translation,” about transience and jet lag in Japan: Scarlett Johannson’s character whispers something into the ear of Bill Murray (playing an ersatz version of himself). We don’t hear what is said, but we have a feeling that neither of them will forget this moment. This is similar to the Moon in our lives.
The transits of the Moon are subtextual, whereas those of the Sun are plot-driven. Of course, a great story requires both. However, by focusing solely on the sun, we overlook the shadows, which add depth to a scene.
As a result, we should pay close attention to the Cancer New Moon on July 17, as it is the Moon of Moons according to our lunar calendar. It will be in its natal sign (Cancer is the Moon’s only sign). Furthermore, it is a transit that occurs in the middle of the year. And because it’s a New Moon, which indicates opportunities for setting goals and intentions, it’s a great time to jot down or journal mid-year (rather than New Year’s) resolutions.
These resolutions, however, should be more local than global. Cancer rules the house. It governs the hearth and lineage in our natal charts, which is our most private sector (as opposed to our most public sector, which is ruled by the Sun). How can we bring life, feeling, love, and emotion to the “local” in our lives?
Because we prefer texture to a complex plot, Cancer New Moon resolutions could include things like dinner invitations among our closest friends with no forced agenda–just togetherness. Or you could spend the afternoon with Mom and Dad. Or that you intend to spend more time with Mom and Dad. Or buying one-of-a-kind items for the home (like that green ceramic bowl) to add literal texture/color to its visual field. Little things accumulate significance over time.
In general, anything that speaks to emotionally rich and affectively nourishing activities near familiar sites associated with the past and present should be preferred (of course, because Cancer is a water sign, we could also align with this Moon by being near brooks, safe harbors, spas, pools-the aquatic life).
Which signs will struggle most during the New Moon in Cancer?
Of course, this lunation will increase sensitivity to water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces). You may be feeling even more emotionally attuned to others–and longing for closer ties with family. A desire for nostalgic activities may prevail. Give in to your desire.
This is an especially powerful transit for those born under the sign of Capricorn, Virgo, or Taurus who seek emotional comfort through material possessions. You might be more inclined to buy sentimental items right now (rather than seek out new experiences).
Are you an Aries, Leo, or Sagittarius (fire signs)? Expect your natural passion for life, ideas, profession, and/or calling to grow even stronger during this lunation. The desire to protect others (rather than argue with them) may also take precedence. Cancer is a protective sign, and you are a fiercely loyal person.
Finally, if you are an air sign (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius), this is a “processing” Moon, and your love of discussion and words may be routed through Cancerian care issues. Expect to feel more inclined to talk through and check on the well-being of those closest to you in order to get to the emotional heart of any problems they may be experiencing.
