Tonight, December 21st, we rejoice in the Solstice, a moment when the Sun “stands still” and lets us feel its full spectrum of light.
The Sun’s waning light causes the longest night of the year in certain regions. The Sun’s apogee marks the beginning of the longest day of the year for some regions of the globe. The amazing energies of this season are accessible to everyone, regardless of location.
Legend has it that during the Solstice, the planet’s energy grid enters a state of greater harmony and the threshold between dimensions is pushed back. As the seasons change, we can also more easily bring about change in our own lives, and it can be easier to connect with the angelic and galactic realms during this time of year.
As the Sun enters Capricorn, the December Solstice coincides with it as well. We can imitate the tenacity, discipline, and rootedness exhibited by the Capricorn zodiac sign.
At this time of year, Saturnalia, a well-liked pagan celebration, would take place, since Saturn rules Capricorn. The rituals associated with Saturnalia, such as decorating pine trees and exchanging gifts, have survived into modern times.
In order to harness the Sun’s energy, let’s examine the Solstice energies in greater detail. You can still feel these energies if you reside close to the equator.
The Dark Night of the Soul- Northern Hemisphere
December 21 is the shortest day and longest night. The longer nights help us enter the dark night of the soul, a time to retreat and hear our innermost thoughts.
We sometimes feel most comfortable being ourselves in the dark. We can feel exposed and pressured to act or be a certain way when the Sun shines down on us.
At midnight, alone with our thoughts, we can truly explore our core and discover a new truth about ourselves. We don’t have to shame ourselves in the Sun’s light. This is part of us too. However, staying there too long can disconnect us, so the Universe calls in the longest night.
Now is our chance to enter the darkness. To retreat from the spotlight and face our truth. This truth doesn’t need explaining or a pretty bow. Analyzing our feelings doesn’t require identifying or writing them down. We must sit with them and let them be.
In the dark, thoughts don’t matter. Our emotions shine. We must let our emotional voice be heard. We must let go of labels and judgments and feel with the heart.
What emotions arise when we sit in the dark and relax? What hurts more? Let ourselves be—what happens?
Spiritual darkness requires us to surrender to this. We should practice this. We must stop talking and listen.
Finding stillness will allow us to step into a new power and truth of who we are.
Dark Night of the Soul Ritual
Sitting in the dark is your nightly ritual. Just sit in the dark for a while; turn off the lights. Try sitting in the dark with your eyes open and see how you feel.
Make it a habit to sit comfortably in your body. Inhale deeply. Let any ideas that pop into your head drift away without trying to control them.
Try to ignore any anxiety or restlessness that arises; you might only have a few minutes to do this.
Soak in a soothing bath after spending time in the dark. Soak in a tub full of relaxing oils and salts and let go of any burdensome thoughts or emotions you no longer wish to hold on to.
Rest and contemplation are necessary during the dark night of the soul. Take your time and relax; the world doesn’t need you to figure out who you really are.
The Celebration of Light- Southern Hemisphere
The December Solstice begins Summer, the season of light! This is your chance to shine, remove your fears, and put yourself out there! Stop holding back and playing small. You should leap forward and celebrate your year-long work.
Life isn’t always sunny, but the Universe brings the longest day of the year to remind us that there is always light at the end of the tunnel. Despite feeling dark, this is temporary. No tragedy is too dark or deep to find the light again.
Light will return to remind us of life’s beauty and bounty.
Sunlight brings clarity to our lives. We know what matters and what we should focus on.
Under the summer Capricorn Sun, we are guided to align our motivations with our highest truth and soul calling. We are instructed to consider what nourishes our Spirit and Soul. The Universe is also giving us Sun-powered opportunities to do that.
Enjoy nature on the longest day as the Sun shines brightly. Explore her oceans, forests, and wildflowers and connect with creation energy.
Feel the Sun’s warmth and know that, like nature, it can transform, nourish, and inspire.
Celebrating the Light Ritual
Get outside and find a cool, shaded spot to sit for your ritual. Remember to bring a notebook and pen.
Settle into a state of deep awareness as you take in your surroundings. If it helps, try to narrow your focus to five main points. Stop what you’re doing and take in each of these sights. After you’ve opened yourself up to this presence, grab a pen and paper and start writing or drawing. Stop stifling your own creativity and just let it flow.
After you’ve calmed your creative energies, close your eyes, put your palm over your heart, and make a wish for everyone—on Earth and in the cosmos.
Light celebrations are a time to rejoice in who you are. This is the perfect opportunity to let your authentic self-shine.
Act with courage, originality, and risk-taking today. The light within you is constant, so go out and do something different.
