The Four Angles in Astrology: The 4 Main Pillars of Life

Words like “Rising Sign” and “Midheaven” are likely familiar to anyone who follows astrology, even casually.

Two of the astrological quadrants go by these names. Significant points along the horizon can be represented on a chart by lines known as angles. These four lines make up the four corners of an astrological chart, which are divided horizontally and vertically. Varying house systems place each angle at the start of one of four significant houses. Then, how do you define angles and what do they signify?

Since they do not stand for any divine or mythical figure’s attributes, the angles are distinct from the astrological planets. They lack the inherent drive and character of celestial bodies like the planets and stars. The four directions—north, south, east, and west—are symbolized by them. Many spiritual practices, from all over the world, include these guidelines. The four cardinal points were represented in Greek mythology by the anemoi, the four winds. As astrology’s four cardinal points, the four winds serve more as portals connecting our material and spiritual realms.

An exact birth time is crucial for your natal astrology chart because of the angles and the houses. At half past the hour, the angle signs shift. What parts of your life are impacted by the planets and aspects in your birth chart? In most house systems, the layout of the houses is determined by either the Ascendant or Midheaven.

Additionally, natal chart angles can be aspected by planets and luminaries, which can further impact the manifestation of these aspects in your life.

The most important angles:

Ascendant or “Rising Sign”

The Rising Sign is also known as the ascendant. Among the astrology’s “big three” signs, it holds significant importance. Your Moon sign and Sun sign are the other two members of that set.

Your outward demeanor is reflected in your Rising Sign, which is a representation of the location of the sun’s rising. The location of the eastern horizon in respect to the stars at the time of your birth is known as the ascendant line in natal astrology charts.

Ascendant placement in the First House is conventional. If it doesn’t, then it’s a First House thing. This dividing line represents the ego’s sharp focus on itself in the First House and the spiritual immensity of the collective unconscious in the 12th House.

The figurative sunrise is your Ascendant. It is the first impression you give to others and the way you carry yourself every day. Your public persona and the impression others form of you are affected by the planets that square your ascendant.

Descendant

Opposite the ascendant is the descendant. Typically, it begins in the 7th House. It stands for the exact location of the sun’s setting relative to the Western horizon when you were born.

Separating the houses that deal with one’s own life from those that deal with other people is what the Descendant represents. In the 7th House, which governs intimate relationships, your Descendant sign might shed light on your interpersonal skills.

In contrast to the narcissistic Ascendant, the Descendant is all about helping others. Your social skills, ability to mesh with others, and level of cooperation are crucial. How you relate to things that are similar to you and those that are different from you is what the Ascendant/Descendent pull is all about.

Your natal chart’s planetary aspects to your descendent determine your social interactions and the ease or difficulty of your relationships. Relationships and romantic aspirations can be influenced by planetary transits through your Descendant at any given time.

The Imum Coeli or “Nadir”

A shorter form of the Imum Coeli’s name is “IC.” Furthermore, it is known as the chart’s Nadir. It stands for the lowest plane of the horoscope, which was not visible to the naked eye when you were born. “Immum Coeli” translates to “bottom of the sky” in conventional Latin. Its orientation is perpendicular to that of the Midheaven.

The Nadir marks the southern end of the Fourth House, which encompasses your domestic life, family history, and private matters. Here we can see the roots that have always been a part of our identity. Your base level of security and comfort is what the IC is alluding to. It reveals a lot about your home life, your family history, and your aspirations for your own family future.

Your unique connection to home and family is shaped by the natal planetary aspects that cross paths with your inner core. Depending on your upbringing, it might provide light on your relationship with home and family as an adult.

The Medium Coeli or “Midheaven”

Often referred to as Midheaven, the highest point in the sky is the Medium Coeli (MC). It is positioned across from the IC. Based on the house system used to determine the chart, your Midheaven and Sun are likely to be close together if you were born near midday.

As a rule, the Midheaven marks the boundary of the 10th House. Nonetheless, it may be located in either the 9th or 11th House in certain house systems. In any case, your connection to public life and your profession are represented by the Midheaven. It reveals your possible career path, your likelihood of enjoying fame, and your openness to career changes throughout your life.

Public perception and professional aspirations can be influenced by natal chart aspects to the major constellation (MC). Those things may be temporarily impacted when planets transit through this area of your chart. Changes in these areas of life can also be sparked by transits.
