Today, October 14, a new moon solar eclipse occurs in Libra, causing some confusion and a lot of growth.

We’re not going to sugarcoat it: eclipse season can be intimidating. And, while it’s unpredictable, it’s nothing we haven’t seen before. Because of the moon’s distance from the sun, this eclipse is known as a “ring of fire” eclipse: instead of completely blocking out the sun’s rays, we’ll see a fiery halo in the sky.

This luminary will set the stage for a serious period of reflection and a desire for harmony. Because the eclipse is in Libra, which is represented by the scales of justice, we’ll want to exercise caution in order to strike a balance that works for us. We’ll also be drawn to getting rid of what no longer serves us, which will free up space for us to manifest bigger, newer dreams as the year comes to a close.

This month’s new moon is thought to be influenced by justice, fairness, peace, love, and harmony — exactly what today’s relationships, whether professional, personal, romantic, or challenging, require. And, because Libra is often associated with romantic relationships, love will be easier to find if you aren’t already married. This lunar energy will significantly improve relationships that start now, giving them the extra strength to not only thrive but also endure in the long run.

This new moon represents our best opportunity of the year to reconnect with ourselves and remember who we are. We must stop viewing ourselves through the eyes of others and pursue the goals that our younger selves desired. Use this new moon to reflect and really figure out what you want out of life — once the new moon has passed, we can use its forward-thinking energy to begin again.

The eclipse will cause a tidal wave of change in our closest relationships, and it will be the first solar eclipse in the sign of Libra since 2005. It also has a very distinct signature: it occurs at 21 degrees of Libra, and we had an eclipse at the same point in the sky on October 14, 2004. Even though it was a long time ago, try to recall the months leading up to that time. What were the major storylines that were unfolding in your life at the time? Under this year’s eclipse, similar themes and topics may be revisited.

Solar eclipses and new moons are frequently associated with new beginnings and clean slates, and eclipses in particular have a way of speeding up timelines and encouraging us to confront what we’ve been avoiding. This one, on the other hand, will be a little different. It will join forces with the South Node of Fate and Destiny. The South Node in astrology represents a point of release — in order for something new to bloom, we must first let go of what no longer serves us. Because of the new moon’s position in Libra, our focus will be on creating balance within our closest relationships. Which of your relationships feel reciprocal? Which relationships in your life could benefit from some tweaking, and which have you outgrown but are too afraid to let go of?

If you’re already in a committed relationship, this new moon may put you to the test in ways you haven’t been tested before. Some relationships will inevitably end due to an imbalanced aspect with retrograde. Neptune in Pisces takes away the rose-colored glasses, allowing us to see the harsh realities. Fortunately, this allows for the formation of new relationships! Some will begin within the next two weeks, while others will take place over the next six months, by the time the full moon lunar eclipse occurs on March 25, 2024.

As the new moon continues to influence us, we must exercise caution with our words. As Mercury in Libra opposes Chiron in Aries this weekend, we may find ourselves saying the wrong thing as the energy intensifies. What is said now may be very hurtful — but if we can maintain our convictions and actions without causing harm, a great deal of healing can occur.

While solar eclipses frequently cause radical change, it is often necessary for us to progress in our lives. Everything will be fine as long as we are open and receptive to what the new moon has to offer.
