Many different things come under childhood trauma. It’s not the same for all. It can range from helplessness to physical abuse and everything else.
This trauma affects us so greatly that we end up suffering for the rest of our lives, if we don’t get help. If you have faced childhood trauma, then you might be able to relate to these things. Often we don’t realize what’s happening inside and so it’s best to seek help before it’s too late.
6 Effects of Childhood Trauma
1. Severe Panic
You suffer from anxiety most of the time and can’t grasp things easily. Life seems hostile towards you and no matter what situation you are in, you seem to be on an edge. You get panic attacks often, like a knee-jerk reaction.
2. Getting settled
Childhood trauma leaves us psychologically wounded and scared. We get too nervous to try new things and get out of the comfort zone. This leads to settling where we get comfortable and thus not trying to do better for ourselves. These people get so traumatized that they sometimes don’t even feel any excitement towards life.
3. Letting fear take charge
In most situations you let your fear win and prevent you from doing things. This happens mostly when that fear is associated with your trauma. In a video, a woman was shown to be scared of taking showers as it was connected to sexual abuse. Similar things can happen. If you can relate to this, it is important to believe in yourself and practice shutting your fear down.
4. Detachment
People with childhood trauma often separate themselves from the outside world completely. They don’t go out unless they have to and don’t hang out with others as they fear getting judged. They end up suffering from social anxiety disorder. They don’t feel comfortable even with family members, which goes on to show how much the trauma affects them. They curl into themselves to protect themselves from the world.
5. Passive-aggressive attitude
These people avoid facing their problems and issues and rather take on a passive-aggressive attitude. They feel they can successfully conceal their negative emotions but that doesn’t happen. They do the complete reverse. They get too afraid to tackle their problems head on and so their defense mechanism is to put on an act of passive-aggression to escape the situation. It might seem to others that they are fine when they are clearly not.
6. Severe Tension
Although you might not be facing that kind of trauma any more but the tension related to it surfaces from time to time. Their brain might still be in a state of turmoil and conflict. It can lead to them facing a flight or fight situation. This generally occurs in case of physical trauma but too much stress can also trigger this. Situations might suddenly remind you of the trauma and trigger excessive tension. It will leave you feeling panicky and jittery often.
