Many years ago I found myself at a party with some ultra “spiritual” people. The party guests were an eclectic bunch of souls who had all awakened or felt drawn to the world of spirit. At the time I was still a newbie to the spiritual community but really wanted to connect with like minded people.
I knew no one at this party so I decided to take the plunge and introduce myself to the first person I saw. It was all friendly and polite and we proceeded to have that usual “getting to know you” conversation, until I asked, “so what do you do for a living?”
This seemingly innocent question instantly offended him. “Why does it matter what I do for a living? Why don’t you ask me something real like what my dreams are?” He replied in a very testy manner.
Ooops. I blushed. I had made a spiritual faux pas. Of course I am not supposed to care about what he does for a living, that is the ego….I’m supposed to ask him something “real”………right?
I look back at this experience and now laugh, but at the time I felt taken aback. Maybe I wasn’t as “spiritual” as I had thought? Maybe I don’t belong with this group of “ultra spiritual” people?
Over the years I have had similar encounters and heard similar stories from people who don’t feel “spiritual enough” to go to spiritually themed events or hang out in spiritual communities.
While I do believe that your vibe attracts your tribe and that everyone you meet is a lesson, it seems that even the spiritual community isn’t exempt from snobbery.
Spiritual snobs (as I shall call them for the sake of this article), tend to alienate, or look down on people who don’t appear to be “spiritual” or who don’t agree with their point of view.
They also tend to look down on society or people don’t seem to practice “spiritual” things like adopting a vegan diet, wearing hemp clothing and talking about their spirit guide Charlie.
Spiritual snobs also tend to beat to the tune of their own drum and often have disregard for other people. As long as it is serving them and they feel good, they don’t really care whose toes they trample on or who they take advantage of.
Now this is not to say every spiritual person or community is like that, but it seems that with this growing new age movement, more and more people are encountering these types of attitudes.
The reality is we are all spiritual.
Yes, you reading this are spiritual, no vegan diet, quartz necklace or hemp pants required! (Although you can definitely bring them along if you want!)
There is no such thing as being more or less spiritual than someone else. The difference is just in our level of awareness and understanding when it comes to our own spirituality.
Everyone expresses their spirituality in different ways from what they wear to what they eat and their philosophy on life. We shouldn’t judge anyone or put anyone down for how they express their spirituality.
(And yes, I am fully aware that by calling people spiritual snobs I am judging, but bare with me….)
At the end of the day, we are all human and we all have things that we are working on.
There is no such thing as a perfect person and as long as we remember that we are all doing are best with what we know, that is all that really matters.
So lets just say Namaste and remember that we are all equal. ?
