Whether you’re excited for all the pumpkin recipes or you’re ready to switch from tanks to cardigans, Libra season — and the fall equinox, which coincides with the sun moving into this cardinal air sign — gives you the go-ahead to soak up all the fall vibes.
But the sun’s time in Libra, the sign represented by the Scales, is about much more than changing out clothes and craving cozy sweatpants. It’s also a time of year dedicated to strengthening relationships, cultivating balance in all aspects of life, giving both sides of any argument equal time, and prioritizing harmony above all else.
Following the third Mercury retrograde of the year, which runs from August 23 to September 15 in Virgo, Libra season in 2023 is also a time to get your ducks in a row. You should also brace yourself for massive, stunning, and potentially thrilling changes as the year’s second eclipse season begins on October 14 with a solar eclipse and new moon in Libra. And, as Mars, the planet of action, begins its journey through one of its own signs, the intimacy-seeking Scorpio, the stakes in relationships have never been higher.
Here’s everything you need to know about Libra season in general, and particularly in 2023.
When Does Libra Season Start?
Libra season lasts approximately from September 22-23 to October 22-23. This year, the sun will be in Libra from September 23 to October 23 (at least in US time zones).
Libra Season’s Overall Mood and Vibe
Look no further than the sign’s ruler, Venus, the planet of relationships, beauty, art, money, and values, to get a sense of how Libra functions in astrology from mid-September to mid-October. Libra is drawn to and thrives on socializing; they frequently strive to be the host with the most, as well as someone known for creating aesthetically pleasing (possibly Instagram-worthy) and memorable moments. Anyone born with Libra placements in their birth chart (meaning Libra is their sun sign, one of their “big three,” or even one of their “big six”) may be inspired to create a buzzy, blissful, and eye-catching scene.
Libra, on the other hand, despises conflict and will go out of their way to avoid it. This corresponds to the air sign’s symbol, the Scales, which represents their need to find balance and see both sides of any given issue. They are natural mediators and peacemakers. It is also worth noting that, as a cardinal sign, Libra is the most forward-thinking of all the air signs. While they’d prefer not to butt heads in order to forge their own path, Libra is hardwired to dive headfirst into ambitious projects.
Libras, who are associated with the seventh house of partnership, may enjoy entertaining large groups, but they are most content when they are pairing up and connecting with a loved one or close friend one on one. (If any sign is predisposed to serial monogamy, it’s the cardinal air sign!)
All of this to say, as the sun moves through Libra, we’re all more aware of the state of our one-on-one relationships. You might find yourself more motivated than in previous seasons to get serious about swiping and online dating. Or perhaps it’s become painfully clear that a particular friendship is riddled with red flags. It could also be as simple as recognizing that working on a professional project with one colleague rather than a group is more productive, or deciding to work out with a personal trainer rather than going to the gym alone. The Libra season also heightens our awareness of issues of injustice and imbalance that must be addressed — not only in our personal lives, but also in the world.
Libra Season: What to Expect in 2023
Although the sun moves through Libra every year, the moon and other planets follow their own paths through the sky, creating a unique astrological picture of Libra season that varies from year to year.
Mercury, the planet of communication, transportation, and technology, will finally move forward during Libra season after its third retrograde of the year, which occurred from August 23 to September 15. You can now put into action whatever you were thinking about, revisiting, and revising during Mercury’s retrograde period.
The second eclipse season will also be in full swing during the Scales season, with the third eclipse of the year — a solar eclipse and new moon — occurring in Libra on October 14. Expect major, unexpected shifts, especially in one-on-one relationships, beauty, and money — all of which are Libran and Venusian themes.
In addition, Mars, the planet of action, energy, and sex, will transit fixed water sign Scorpio from October 12 to November 24 (covering half of Libra, all of Scorpio, and the first few days of Sagittarius season). And as it moves through the Scorpion, the sign of intimacy and transformation, we’ll all be more inclined to avoid superficial conversations, seek deeper emotional connections, and perhaps fixate and dig our heels in when it comes to our deepest desires.
This Libra season, here’s what each sign can expect. Feel free to read the following based on your astrological sign and/or rising sign as well.
Aries (March 20-April 19)
Because the confident sun is currently transiting your seventh house of partnership, Aries, Libra season encourages you to focus on your closest friendship, relationship, or possibly professional partnership. You can’t help but think about how you’re showing up for the people with whom you have the strongest bonds — and how they’re showing up for you. Reciprocity is essential, and if someone isn’t giving as much as you, it may be time to reconsider the relationship.
Taurus (April 20-May 20)
The sun’s transit through your sixth house of routine and wellness draws your attention to your daily activities and the ways you maintain your inner balance. You might be motivated to try a new fitness regimen, reorganize your home office, or streamline your commitments so that you can focus even more exclusively on projects that align with your larger goals.
Gemini (May 21-June 20)
Because the sun moves through your fourth house of home life, encouraging you to be a bit of a homebody, Virgo season can actually inspire you to slow down a bit more than usual. When it enters Libra, however, it takes on a whole new energy, because the sun in your fifth house of romance and self-expression fuels your desire to flirt, connect, be spontaneous, be playful, and follow your artistic impulses. In other words, Gemini, this is one of the most enjoyable times of the year for you — enjoy it!
Cancer (June 21-July 22)
Over the last month, as the sun has moved through Virgo, it’s been in your third house of communication, which is a super-social zone, so your schedule has probably been bursting at the seams with to-dos and meet-ups with friends — perhaps even more than you would have ideally liked. Now that you’re in your fourth house of home life, you’ll notice that the pace of life slows down and becomes cozier. You can devote even more time to one of your favorite activities: bonding with your loved ones.
Leo (July 23-August 22)
Fall may inspire some people to slow down and rest more, but that is unlikely to be the case for you, Leo, because your ruler, the confident sun, is currently transiting your third house of communication, which is one of the most social places to be. Indeed, with all of the invitations to hang out with friends, after-work happy hours, short-distance trips, and workouts with friends, you may find yourself exhausted, so make time for recharging self-care.
Virgo (August 23-September 22)
Because it’s your birthday season, the sun’s journey through your sign is always lovely, and you may find yourself lighting up the room even more than usual. But now that it’s in your second house of income, you can turn any big picture ideas or passion projects you’ve been kicking around into something concrete. You’ll be eager to put one foot in front of the other and see your vision become a reality. Just make sure that whatever you’re working on aligns with your values, because that’s the key to success right now.
Libra (September 23-October 22)
Libra, welcome to your season! The sun moves through your twelfth house of spirituality during Virgo season, but now that the sun is shining on you and your first house of self, you can step into the spotlight. You’ll be more conscious of how you present yourself, and you might even be inspired to revamp your website, business cards, or social media presence. This can also be a great time to get crystal clear on what you want to accomplish — and to start saying it out loud, as this is the first step toward manifestation.
Scorpio (October 23-November 21)
With the sun in your twelfth house of spirituality right now, it’s almost as if you’re backstage, resting and dreaming and perhaps also anticipating your moment in the spotlight. You may prioritize self-reflection and learning from your dreams. You’ll also benefit from a mind-body practice (such as journaling or meditating) to improve your psychological well-being.
Sagittarius (November 22-December 21)
While the confident sun transits your eleventh house of networking, Sag, you’ll be even more social and concerned with your connections to friends and colleagues. If you’ve had a long-term goal in mind, exchanging notes with others can help you gain even more clarity on the best strategy for making it a reality. You’ll also be reassured that you’re part of a community that sees and values what you bring to the table.
Capricorn (December 22-January 19)
You may be more willing to take risks, travel, get out of your comfort zone, and hone your skills by soaking up knowledge during the Virgo season. And, as the sun moves through your tenth house of career and public image during Libra season, you can put what you’ve learned over the last month to good use. It’s time to take on a leadership role or throw your hat in the ring for more responsibility. You can’t help but make a good impression on higher-ups.
Aquarius (January 20-February 18)
There is no better season than Libra season to break free from your mundane routine, see new sights, meet new people, and just generally broaden your horizons, because the sun moves through your ninth house of higher learning and adventure. Make it a point to listen to your intuition in order to clarify what you truly want to accomplish and what will bring you the most fulfillment — whether that’s working with a mentor, enrolling in a class, or planning a world trip.
Pisces (February 19-March 20)
Pisces, Libra season is your chance to connect with your closest friends and family in a more meaningful way, thanks to the confident sun’s transit through your eighth house of emotional bonds and intimacy. You may feel especially confident expressing your sexual needs right now, and you’ll also become more aware of what gives you a sense of comfort and security — physically and emotionally. Opening up about these and other realizations can be extremely empowering.
